Neighborhoods

Richmond's neighborhoods are mostly listed because of architecture or general buzz. When you hear "Fan," think architecture and VCU, Church Hill is also amazing for architecture--Federal and a comprehensive nighttime view of the city looking west. When you hear Shockoe Bottom or Shockoe Slip, it's clubs and bars. Short Pump has a big Nordstrom/Pottery Barn/Crate & Barrel/Apple type supermall and a lot of the most popular chain restaurants. You get the picture. p.s. While in the West End, Anoka if you like Indian food and the Golden Key if you crave Chinese. Mekong is out of this world for Vietnamese and BEER. We've got it all, baby.
The Fan is literally a series of streets shaped like a Fan. This is near the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. The architecture is great, and there are a lot of restaurants in the area. This guy's already done the work. Check this out: https://rerva.com/the-fan-district/. Note: the monuments mentioned are the very monuments that have been removed. Richmond's still trying to figure out how to use the locations for good and for the future of our fair city.

Carytown is a shopping and restaurant neighborhood a short drive from my house. Check out this website for the history and a list of restaurants and shops. My favorite spots: The historic Byrd Theatre (showing 2nd run films, film festival type events, and sing-alongs. It features Bob Gulledge on "the mighty Wurlitzer" from time to time. Check the schedule: (https://byrdtheatre.org/) My favorite hangout is probably the New York Deli--which is a bar and restaurant--featuring great deli sandwiches. Check out the whole thing at: (https://www.carytownrva.com/explore)

This is another cool neighborhood to check out. It hosts a younger scene than I tend to frequent these days. (I did dance on tables at Domino's Doghouse in my misspent youth. The Doghouse is gone, and it took my youth with it!). Still--there are restaurants, bars, clubs, and a small farmer's market on Thursdays. Go to: https://venturerichmond.com/live-downtown/historic-neighborhoods/shockoe-bottom/ for more information.

My favorite restaurants

I'm adding this to my guidebook because if you're IN Richmond, it's too late to get a reservation. Do that here: https://stellasrichmond.com/ This place stays busy! It's a Greek restaurant that featuresgreat small plates, a killer branzino, and flaming saganaki. They project Zorba the Greek, Never on Sunday, and Jason and the Argonauts in an endless loop on the wall. I like the lighting because it's on the dim side. The place is a little noisy, but it's one of our go-to's. I highly recommend it.

Blue Atlas is a little bit of a drive from here, but it's worth it. It's located on Fulton Hill in a converted school that also houses artists' studios. It features small plates and local produce with a limited, but delightful menu. Try the flatbread. It's DE-LICIOUS. Ask for an outdoor table, weather permitting. After dark, it offers a fantastic view of the city skyline from the east. You can carry a drink out and hang out in the Adirondack chairs around a fire. https://www.blueatlasrva.com/.

Fine dining? Lemaire. I worked in the Jefferson hotel "back in the day" when it first reopened. Built in 1895, it is a gorgeous grand hotel. Lemaire is pricey, but I tend to go there for Happy Hour. We grab an appetizer or a burger in the bar (it's less fancy than the restaurant), and just soak in the hotel itself. You won't be disappointed.

This is probably our favorite restaurant, and it's less than 2 miles from my house! It looks like a bit of a greasy spoon, but, trust me, it's not. The food is great, and, at the very least, you can go to the deli market side and order yourself a fennel and sausage pizza to go. The crust is light as a feather! https://www.galleykitchen.info/welcome.

Hey, it's O'Toole's. It's been there forever. It's a corner bar with regulars, Irish Coats of Arms--including my family's "Dolan"), occasional entertainment, Tuesday Burger Night (if they're still doing that--it's crowded 'cause the burgers are excellent and cheap), and a wide-ranging menu. The sandwiches are great, but the entrees are also good. Near my house, so... I go there a lot.

Sightseeing

I have tons of suggestions on the computer in my AirBnB space (where you can quickly click links for more info). I don't want to duplicate the work here, so check out my recommendations on the google drive: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JPjknOQ0NgSzF3B3IDZ9KKXxHYdey1igjcj43Ukt59U/edit.
The VMFA (as we call it) is a great museum. If you're an art lover, you'll want to check this out. For a city the size of Richmond, this museum is surprisingly comprehensive! Their fine dining restaurant, Amuse, is delightful! Right on the edge of "The Fan" in what is, not surprisingly called, the "Museum District," it's convenient to a lot of eating and drinking places.

Brown's Island is home of a lot of cool festivals and musical events. I just saw this statue for the first time. It is incredible.

여행 팁

교통편

Richmond is still primarily a car-needed city. However...

In some parts of the city (the Fan, the VCU area, and downtown), we have shared scooters. (https://www.rva.gov/public-works/e-scooter-program), as well as shared bikes. Downtown is catching up on bike lanes. There is GRTC (Greater Richmond Transit) which isn't great, BUT there is one bus called "The Pulse" that allows you to park your car and get downtown to the theatre and arts district (for $1.50 a ride) without the hassle of trying to park. It runs every fifteen minutes. (http://ridegrtc.com/brt/)

Brewery culture!

Richmond is known for its craft breweries. My favorites may not be yours (for beer) as I tend toward the old school ESBs--not the goses or sours or IPAs. For a cool, intimate vibe, though, check out Final Gravity (North Side) and Isley Brewing in Scott's Addition. Hardywood and Legend are the "big boys," and both frequently feature entertainment. Check out all the RVA breweries. There are loads of them.
