St Just doesn't offer gourmet yet, but The Kings is a good place to eat. It's a St Austell Ales pub with a couple of beers on all the time. Wednesday night is quiz night, but it doesn't start until 9.00 so you can eat before, then join in the light hearted quiz. And of course, above all, it's in the amazing town of St Just.

I know nothing about golf! What I do know is that Cape Cornwall Golf Club has a bay window where I love to sit and enjoy lunch on pretty much any day when it's clear enough to see the view. If it's warm the terrace is even better. Beer is expensive, but the food is good, service generally charming, and if you like batting balls with a long stick then I imagine it must be a wonderful place to practice your sport. The club also has rooms and a pool.

The Tolcarne manages to be a good place to go for a decent pint, and a very good restaurant. Owned and overseen by Ben Tunicliffe - if you've had an experience at The Beach don't let it put you off this very different offering. It's small - probably less than 20 covers, and that's great, you get good service and excellent food at a reasonable price. Fish is the speciality and I'd go for that every time. It's a drive or taxi ride from St Just, but worth it.

What a cracking little pub The Queens is. It's only 20 minutes walk from St Just, or a couple of minutes on the bus. Food is OK and beer is good, with a good mix of visitors and locals. Grab a seat outside sheltered from the wind into the evening. Perfect for stopping off on the way to or from the stunning Crown Mines on the cliff edge.

Here's another pub that's worth trying for dinner. The Trewellard Arms serves good beers and local ciders and the food is pretty good too. Not a gastropub, but honest home cooked fare. We tend to leave our car there and walk back to St Just so that we can enjoy a couple of drinks. The route back across the fields passes Botallack where The Queens is worth trying too.

We don't have the option to call anything a pub in Air's dropdowns, hence calling this a restaurant. The Coldstreamer is in the secret and lovely village of Gulval. There's not a lot there, but what there is is rather nice. If you have ten minutes pop into the church as well. The pub was refurbished in 2016 and is now comfortable, smart, and serves good food with a seafood theme. We thought the service was a tad ragged, but I suspect it was just a bad day for the guy behind the bar. We'll certainly go again.

Drinks & Nightlife

The Star is a drinking pub, that might sound obvious, but they're a rare breed these days. The only food served is crisps and nuts. Dark inside, the floor is polished bitumen, the walls black and the ceiling dark red - you'll feel like you're in the secret smugglers' den! Sport is shown in the side bar to leave the main room quiet for discussing the important affairs of the day, and playing euchre. Live music - on Mondays it's folk night, on Thursdays it's Open Mic and the night gets better and louder as it gets later.

Sightseeing

The Carn is a simple hill over the town, but on a clear day what a view it offers! 200 degrees of sea view, including right down to Lands End, and all of the other key hills in the area, across a patchwork of fields, some of which are part of truly ancient field systems. It's a great sundowner spot - you might well see us there!

Oh my word! Cape Cornwall is one of my favourite places on this earth. It's simple, barren, hardly anything there, but it's stunning. It's on the South West Coast Path and is bordered by the lovely Priest's Cove which many locals swim off most of the year round, and the less accessible Porthledden on the north side. You'll find many pictures on our blog, I can't stop myself from taking pictures there.

Gwynver, or Gwenver is a truly beautiful beach. It is always quiet there as it's quite a trek down the cliff path to get there from the private car park at the top. It has good clean water, a lifeguard in summer, and clean sand. There's often a rip to the sea so don't swim when there is no life guard unless you are a strong experienced sea swimmer. From St Just it's probably an hour's walk, either across the fields, or better still, along the coast path. Fron Gewnver you can walk to Sennen where there are facilities such as restaurants, cafes and The Old Success.

Wild. Rugged. Beautiful. The Crown Mines are perched on the very edge of the cliff, they must have been horrendous to work in - the old boys in the town talk of how you could hear the rocks moving on the sea bed when they were in the shafts that went under the sea. And spare a moment to consider how they were built. For now though they make an iconic local photo opportunity as well as staring in many films. They're a few minutes walk from The Queens pub in Botallack.

Porth Nanven, Penanven, Cot Valley, you'll hear it called by various names, but this is the little beach at the end of the beautiful Cot Valley. Cot itself is so lush and peaceful today that it's hard to imagine it once being a centre of industry, but even 100 years ago the noise in the valley would have been deafening. Today the beach at the end is a quiet place, usually with a few locals taking a swim off the boulders, or from the beach at low tide. It's made all the more photogenic by the Brisons, the rock that dominates the view a kilometre off shore. Porth Nanven is of geological interest too as the cliffs are a great example of a raised beach, showing us clear evidence of the changing sea levels over the millennia. Why go here? It's on the South West Coastal Trial, it's almost always peaceful, and the swimming is good. Look out for coughs on the cliffs. Great at any time of day, but best in the evenings. Walk down Bosorne Street and keep going to the end, or follow the cliff path from Cape Cornwall.

The Carn is the hill that dominates St Just to the north. It's a barren stretch of moorland that has wonderful views of the coast for miles around. It's beauty is its wildness, despite only being 20 minutes walk out of town. You can take various paths off the Carn and come back to St Just, drop down to Botallack, or carry on across the moorland to the exciting Chûn Castle. On the way up try to pass Tregeseal Stone Circle - you'll find an alternative tale of its origin in The Legend of Archavon.

Depending on your point of view Chûn Castle is either a pile of rocks in the middle of nowhere, or an exciting place to let the imagination run wild. Chûn is an iron age fort that is suspected of having been occupied for about four hundred years from the 3rd century BC! There are two distinct defensive ring walls, with a single entrance point and inside you can work out where small houses once stood. I walked across from Carn Kenidjack the first time I visited Chûn and I was blown away by the atmosphere of the place - I hope you love it too, it's one of the many ancient sites that dot our landscape.

The quoits are particular to the far west peninsular of Cornwall, burial chambers perhaps for groups of people or perhaps important chiefs, they are usually in places commanding wonderful views - and why not, after all, we're dead a long time. Chun Quoit predates the nearby Chun Castle by a couple of millennia making it about four thousand years old. If you get there have a thought about how on earth the builders got the capstone in place.

This is both to offer up Zennor as a great place to stop, and to suggest the whole north cliffs north between St Just and St Ives. It's often listed as one of the great drives in Britain, and it still takes my breath away decades after I first cycled it as a lad. Zennor is a cracking place to stop for a meal, or just a drink. The Tinners is mostly ancient pub with good beers, although recently it has had a modern extension it retains its character and the food is usually great. A good walk is to start in Zennor, follow the footpath by the church down to the cliffs and head west to Gurnard's Head. Climb the track inland, have a drink at the Gurnard's Head Hotel before crossing the fields back to Zennor (some road walking required so please be careful).

The ultimate sightseeing opportunity must be a scenic flight from Lands End Airport - 20 minutes for £50 may sound a lot, but this is an absolute cracker in good weather. I first did it years ago in a rickety little plane that was pretty scary, now it's much more formal, but still brilliant.

Entertainment & Activities

I'm not sure what a "Movie Theatre" is, but this is a great cinema. Set up by genuine film fans it shows a healthy mix of arthouse and blockbuster films, but nothing that would make you cringe. It has a good friendly bar and cafe too. Just a few miles drive from St Just.

The category of museum doesn't do justice to Carn Euny as one of the great things about it is that it's open all year with no pay booths or guides, you just walk in and let your imagination run wild as you consider life in bronze age Cornwall.

This is for summer only, and well worth a look. There's a small area of the lovely Penlee Park in Penzance that's completely enclosed by trees and a stage has been built. The theatre runs throughout the summer and on a dry night it's a fantastic place to absorb a play or see a concert. There's a bar and you can get a curry too. Look outing particular for the Miracle Theatre Company who have a great knack of creating entertaining shows and raising a laugh from the most serious situations.

The Plain. Unless you're told otherwise the Plain in St Just is just a nice green field in the middle of town. In actual fact the Plain-an-Garry is the oldest theatre in Britain, pre-dating Shakespeare's Globe by more years than anyone can remember or guess at. It was originally used to preform the Miracle Plays in, and in recent years the Ordinal cycle has been revived. It's also the centre of the Lafrowda Festival as well as many other events and plays during the year. The huge rocks in a small circle were used for rock drilling competitions using hand drills - blinking hard work, but then the miners had to be hard men.

Essentials

Like many small communities, our essentials are delivered by The Co-operative. It's a small store but has most of what you'll need saving you the 8 mile round trip to the supermarkets in Penzance. The team are friendly. You can get cash back. But you will probably have to queue. Don't worry, relax into it, it's part of being in St Just.

We're lucky to have two real butchers, selling meat form their own cattle, in this special little town of St Just. Vivian Olds is harder to find, it's opposite the huge Wesleyan Chapel that dominates the town. Walk down Chapel Street and turn left. It's like stepping back into the fifties. If Randolph serves you be ready for a chat and learning anything you'd like to know about living in St Just.
