Great places for dogs

The closest place for a walk in the woods is just at the end of our block. Head right down Keith Road until you reach MacKay Avenue. Cross MacKay and you’ll see an entrance to MacKay Creek Greenbelt. Here you’ll find a 1 km trail loop which runs along the creek. While it’s technically on leash, almost all dogs run free as long as they are under control. Keep your eyes peeled for Great Blue Heron in the river at times. Nutella loves cooking off in the creek - in all season!

About a 20 minute walk from the house, down towards the water, is the beautiful Kings Mill dog park. This is a great gated park where Nutella loves to run around with newfound friends and swim in the ocean. With a beautiful view of the downtown skyline, we’ve also spotted harbour seals and cormorant in the harbour. This dog park offers fresh drinking water.

If you are willing to take a quick drive, Ambleside off leash dog park is well worth a visit. Park at or behind Park Royal shopping centre nearest to the water as you can find, grab your Starbucks, and bring your dog to the off leash part of Ambleside. The views from this park of Lions Gate bridge, Stanley Park and the ocean freighters are stunning. We’ve seen kite surfing here on windy days, and with lots of space to chase balls or swim, there is never a dull moment!

Accessible from either Arborlynn Drive (Lynn Valley) or Lillooet Road (Seymour area) this is a wonderful set of trails that is off leash and which follows a large freshwater river. I believe if you follow the trail long enough it connects to the Baden Powell trail and the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve. We just come here for the fresh river swims.
