The Flecker Botanic Gardens were created in 1886, which means that many of the large plants and trees are lush and well established. The extensive selection of tropical flora includes some rare plants seldom found elsewhere in the world. These include exotic species of palms, gingers, orchids, bamboos, vines, aroids and tropical fruit trees. Some of the rarest plants in the world can be found at Flecker Botanic Gardens, including a tropical flower known as the Amorphophallus Titanum, which weighs up to 70 kg with a single leaf almost 7 meters across. The exotic rainforest plant is only one of two found in Australia. Amazing arrays of orchids are spotted throughout the gardens, boasting beautiful bright colours that contrast perfectly with the variegated shades of greens. Tropical fruit trees such as the Durian, Purple Mangosteen, Soursop and Black Sapote are star attractions of the Botanic Gardens. A carnivorous plant, the Nepenthes, can be found lurking amongst the lush rainforest vegetation, waiting for unsuspecting prey to enter its domain. The Nepenthes is a cleverly designed plant, whose leaves form into a 'pitcher'. Inside the pitcher is sweet nectar, luring the insects and bugs onto the rim of the pitcher, which is very slippery, causing the insects to fall into the 'trap' where they get stuck in more nectar and digested by the plant.
Babbling brooks and waterways meander throughout the Cairns Botanical Gardens, and small ornate bridges over these waterways create picture-perfect photograph opportunities. Lush rainforest vegetation gives way to large grassy lawns, the perfect place for the children to play and the adults relax. Tall trees provide shaded areas to relax and watch the incessant flitter and flutter of exotic butterflies and birds.
Located underneath the lush canopy of the rainforest is the Botanic Garden Restaurant. The Botanic Garden Restaurant is open-air and undercover, allowing diners to immerse themselves in the abundance of natural beauty that is the Botanic Gardens. The Cairns Botanic Garden Restaurant features sumptuous breakfasts, brunches and lunches, and is renowned for its Sunday Champagne breakfast, exquisite café menu that features 100 % natural produce, and their famous strawberry waffles. The Botanic Gardens Restaurant is open everyday for breakfast and lunch, operating daily from 7:00 am until 4:30 pm. In 1878 John Atherton found tin and gold in the area and he is credited with naming the town as a kind of combination of "tin" and "kangaroo".
Tinaroo Dam is one of the major irrigation water storages in Queensland. It was created by damming the Barron River. The aim was to supply reliable water for local tobacco farming (the tobacco farming stopped in 2003 and the land is now used as general purpose irrigation water) and to supplement the supply of water to the Barron Gorge Hydro-Electricity Station.
The town of Tinaroo has grown over the years so that now it offers a pleasant escape from the heat of the coast. Its setting on the shores of the artificial lake is really beautiful and locals, aware that there is a passing tourist trade, have attempted to cater for differing needs.

Initially before tourism really took off in Cairns local people came to admire the Barron Falls and spend time in the cool rainforests and admire the natural attractions, while artisans or hippies were attracted to live in the region for its remoteness yet village like atmosphere and access to Cairns. The hippies created an environment that was based on growing, sharing, creating, and entertainment for each other and it became a really nice warm community that others became attracted to.
That easy going vibe is still the culture of Kuranda Village today and as you walk around and speak to the locals you too will feel the warm relaxed embrace of the village residents even though the village is now recognised as a huge tourist attraction 364 days of the year.

A visit to Kuranda Village is one of the top 3 iconic tourist attractions of Cairns and Tropical North Queensland and no matter how you get here you are sure to be pleased with what you will discover in this quaint rainforest village in the mountains behind Cairns.
There is so much to see and do in Kuranda you may even wish to explore the village over 2 days or even spend the night on the beautiful Atherton Tablelands so you can do some of the rainforest walks and river cruises around Kuranda over 2 days.

The village of Yungaburra is surrounded by spectacular countryside, which has been influenced and shaped by many, now extinct, volcanoes. The landscape is stunning, with outstandingly beautiful natural attractions: crater lakes, waterfalls and World Heritage rain forest. This tranquil and picturesque village is situated 720 metres (2400 feet) above sea level. This ideal holiday destination is cooler than the coastal area during summer, and in winter, the mild days and refreshing nights are an excuse to enjoy a crackling log fire.
Peterson’s Creek meanders past the village and is a haven for wildlife. Watch for platypus, tree-kangaroos, wallabies and a large variety of birds (view map). Yungaburra, the heart of the Tablelands, was established in 1890, and is listed by the National Trust of Queensland with many of the original buildings still in use. Walk the Old Town Loop and experience local history (view map).
Yungaburra is easily accessible from Cairns, being just over one hour travelling via the Gillies Range or drive from Cairns’ northern beaches via the Kuranda Range. If you are driving north from Townsville you can travel up the Palmerston Highway from Innisfail
