Rovinj is the romantic Mediterranean, a destination for all those longing for the sentimental atmosphere of the irreversibly past times. Rovinj had started its romantic life on an island, which narrow space conditioned the construction of closely-built houses, narrow streets and small squares, even today untouched by modern urbanism. Built on its rich fishing tradition, Rovinj has become recognizable by its unique batana fishing boat, bitinada folk songs as well as the spacio, a local tavern or a wine cellar used by the inhabitants of Rovinj for storing, tasting and selling wine.

Cape Kamenjak and the Medulin Islands The unusually indented southernmost cape of the Peninsula is equally interesting viewed from land, air or sea. It is one of the last oases of the coastal region that has preserved its original appearance - a mosaic of cultivated fields, pastures and green groves immersed in the deep blue sea. Resembling at first glance scorched land of the southernmost tip of Istria, Cape Kamenjak conceals great secrets of nature. Lovely coves and beaches, as well as crystal-clear sea make this area a particularly attractive destination. Although camping is not allowed in this area, there are various other opportunities for visitors to enjoy the beauties of Kamenjak. One of the marked Istrian bike tracks passes here, and since it is not demanding, everyone can enjoy the easy ride and magnificent views. Or one can also spend the entire day walking and discovering the beauties of Kamenjak. This protruding peninsula offers numerous possibilities for summer sports. Due to the extremely strong sea currents that meet here, diving is allowed only for professionals, but always accompanied by experienced and certified divers. Favourable winds offer great possibilities for windsurfing, however one should be careful and first check the weather forecast, because sudden changes of weather conditions, wind and sea currents on the southernmost tip of Istria are nothing unusual at any time of the year.

The Brijuni Islands, located in the south of the western Istrian coast, has a total of 14 islands and islets, making it the best indented and largest group of islands on the Istrian area. Together with the surrounding sea and underwater life, Brijuni was declared the national park in 1983 in light of its exceptional value. The largest of the islands is Veliki Brijun. Its coast as well as those of other islands are mainly short and rocky, although easily reachable. Geologically and geomorphologically, Brijuni represent an extension of west Istria. It is not surprising that 10000 years ago they were an integral part of the Istrian land. There are numerous dinosaur footprints on Brijuni proving their existence on the island some 160 million years ago. They can be seen on four sites on Veli Brijun. The Brijuni dinosaurs come from the Cretaceous period, the last period before their extinction. More than 200 footprints of amazing reptiles can be seen in the Cretaceous park. Although the remains were discovered back in 1925, detailed explorations were carried out as late as the 1990s, when they were found to belong to Theropoids, a bipod carnivore, and aggressive and fast carnivore from the Coelurosaria group. Animal kingdom on the islands has been enriched by numerous imported species. Apart from the native species such as the rabbits or various birds, one can seen exotic and less exotic animals which have become accustomed to the climate including deer, llama, zebra or an elephant. Apart from fauna, the flora also plays an important role. Mediterranean climate with lots of sunshine and warmth and sufficient air humidity facilitated dense vegetation of native plants such as holm oak, strawberry tree and myrrh. They are supplemented by various types of pines, sequoia, eucaliptus and fir trees, not characteristic for the Brijuni islands. The most famous among the Brijuni flora is the Old Olive, one of the oldest on the Mediterranean. It still produces olives for making the olive oil even after 1600 years of its life.

On the west side of the islet of St. Nicholas which is situated near Poreč, the Venetians have built in 1403 a 15 meter tall lighthouse on the highest part of the island. It was the highest lighthouse at the time, on the eastern coast of the Adriatic and was visible at a great distance. The fire which has burned because of the trees that grew on the island for centuries on the top of the lighthouse was replaced in the 17th century by a large lantern. The lighthouse was no longer so important during the Austro-Hungarian rule.

Although it consists of only fifteen or so house, the old village of Kotli is one of the most attractive vacation resorts in central Istria. It is located east of Buzet in the valley of the River Rečina, which after connecting with the rivulet Draga, continues to flow as the River Mirna, the longest and most known Istrian river. Rečina is the official name of the river, by which it is marked on most maps, but the people who live in the valley call it Mirna. In autumn, when the snow starts to melt on Učka and Ćićarija, and after the rains, it fills with water, and during the summer, after long droughts, it can completely disappear. Till the 2nd World War there was no primary school in the village, so the children had to walk several kilometers to the school in Hum, which was established in the mid 19th century. During the years the school was closed, the children went to school in Buzet. Through the valley of the River Rečina, and all the way to Buzet, there is an underpinned path which the children took to go to school, and the villagers to take their products to the annual June fair in Sveti Ivan near Buzet. In past centuries, Kotli was the biggest and wealthiest village in the Hum area – Humstina, with more than hundred inhabitants. After the 2nd World War, as has happened in many villages and towns in central Istria, a lot of people left. The villagers of Kotli went to Buzet, and areas around Poreč and Kopar, and tried to make ends meet there, while the time has taken its toll on the abandoned village house. In the 1970’s census, it was recorded that there are still 14 people living in Kotli, but soon they left too, and the village remained empty and dead. Today, Kotli is alive only »on paper« – in the last census in 2001, it was recorded that there is only one inhabitant.

In the northern part of Istria, overlooking the Mirna River valley, lies surely the most famous and attractive Istrian medieval town of Motovun-Montona. This captivating hilltop town is one of the characteristic symbols of the Istrian interior. The Romanesque-Gothic bell tower with a crenulated crown from the 13th century, standing next to the Parish Church of St. Stephen from the 17th century, dominates the town's historic core. In the central square is the Romanesque Municipal Palace, the largest secular building in Istria of that period surrounded by many other historic buildings. As Motovun-Montona has long since been an attractive and popular tourist destination accommodation is offered in the town centre, in hotel Kaštel situated in the restored palace of the Polesini family.

Grožnjan-Grisignana, a small Istrian town of great cultural significance not only in Croatia but also internationally, lives its summer months very intensely. Every year at the beginning of May, the little streets and squares of Grožnjan-Grisignana metamorphose and turn into a truly artistic beehive: it opens its summer music academies for young people, its artistic, dance and drama workshops and its peace activism workshops under the leadership of well-known experts and teachers and famous names from music, art and drama.
