Activities beyond the beach with children in San Sebastian! *check out my separate guide for more about our favourite playgrounds*
Where the Old Part of San Sebastian meets the Concha bay you can appreciate the contrasting architecture of the Town hall and the Rationalist Club Náutico building. The play park here is great for the littlest ones, with baby swings and an area for toddlers. The Palace Carousel is beautifully nostalgic and is a sure fire hit with the little ones. We like it best when it's lit up at dusk. Big discounts if you buy a book of 20 tickets.

A surreal Victorian mini theme park. Spectacular views. The little ones will love the rides and adults can soak up the nostalgia and the amazing views. We usually bring the car or take the bus down and park at the bottom of the hill and then take the funicular up. Using the funicular to get here is often the best bit. Bring a fold up travel pushchair for the funicular as there's only one pushchair space available.

Perfect spot for a picnic with children. Views over the Concha bay. You can get here easily from the villa by heading to Aiete Pasealekua and then Duque de Bainas Road and down some steep steps ( not pushchair accessible). Otherwise it's very close to the Ondarretta and Concha beaches.

An impressive space for art, photography, film, family toys and games, food, viewing platforms and more in the neighbourhood of Egia. At the moment there is a hands-on kids' exhibition by Emma Kunz, where little ones can learn and experiment with art movement, colours, the senses. Sign up for guided sessions on weekends at 12 and 17:00 or go for free access Tues- Sunday 12:00-14:00 & 16:00-19:00. One of our favourite rainy day plans to hang out inside with family! Try the giant pizzas in the downstairs cafe at lunchtime or grab soups and salads for a quick healthy lunch. The top-floor restaurant, Labe ( Basque for oven) is linked to the Basque Culinary Institute and all my friends give it rave reviews. I love their green, tropical terrace with fairy lights and relaxed atmosphere above the noise of the city. Book early on their website. The Cubik creativity library and Media lab on the second floor gives free access to books, boardgames, toys, musical instruments, games consoles, films and lots more ( Go to medialab section on Tabakalera website if you want to book a very specific item). There are even table tennis tables somewhere on one of the landings. Check out story and drama workshops for children too. ( Pre-covid) My children liked running and scooting around the open spaces in the modern side of the building and climbing the beautiful sweeping wooden stairs in the original building entrance. On a dry day, the Cristina Enea park is just over the road. There's a play are at the entrance as well as a duck pond a few minute walk up into the park. You might be able to spot some peacocks here.

The Science museum is a 10-minute bus ride away, the Miramon neighbourhood. Take bus number 19 or 31 from La Cumbre. Ideal for a rainy day with children aged 3-18. Jam packed with activities, you could take 2 full days to look around all the hands-on science experiments. You can also sign up for shows at the planetarium, a flight simulator and Lego workshops from children aged 2. Nice set menu in the cafe!

This is our favourite park in San Sebastian. In a quiet neighbourhood 10 minutes walk from the house. Or 5 mins on the 31 or 19 bus from La Cumbre. A beautiful green space with trees, sculptures, a duck pond with swans and a even a secret underground library with a children's section for rainy days. The sandy play area is best for children aged 3 and above. You can even get a coffee, hot chocolate, beers and pintxos in the park cafe ( Aietako Topalekua) 7 days a week.

This calm and unassuming cafe has a sheltered terrace in the Aiete Palace garden. What I think could have been the old stables is now the perfect spot to soak up the sun while the children explore the Aiete Park play area. Ideal for a Sunday morning coffee or a few pintxos.

Motora Little boat taxi to cross over the estuary from Pasaia San Juan to Pasaia San Pedro on this little boat. 2-minute crossing for 80 cents each. Feel the sea breeze without worrying about children on a boat for too long!

A short boat trip from the port to Santa Clara Island. Grab a pintxo and a a caña and come back! The tiny pebble beach here makes for a good change of scenery and a new art gallery up the hill might be worth a visit.

A 15 minute walk from the house, this pool is our favourite for a weekend swim with the little ones. Inside there's a warm baby pool and a 25m competition pool. In the summer you can access a large outdoor grassy area, big shallow paddling pool and 25 m outdoor pool. We like to picnic here when the beach gets too busy. The friendly Umami cafe here is a big bonus, offering great brunch options. We love their homemade empanadillas and healthy tostadas.

In Pasaia- small village just up the coast. Witness the hand crafting of a replica 16th Century Basque whaling ship. Really interesting stuff! Guided visit of the workshop and museum exhibition.
