Sightseeing

For over 230 years, the "English" market has been at the heart of Cork commerce. Today, it is a bustling centre of shops and artisan stalls that supply many of the local hotels and restaurants of the city with fresh produce from across the county. It's a covered market and well worth visiting even if just to enjoy a coffee in one of the small cafes.

Situated north west of Cork city, you'll need a car or taxi to bring you from the apartment. The castle is famous for its Blarney stone and kissing it is supposed to bestow you with the gift of the gab (but you'll need a head for heights first!). The grounds of the castle are beautiful and can take hours to explore fully. There is an entrance fee to the castle so check their website. Parking is also available outside the grounds.

Nightlife

Tucked down an alleyway just off Oliver Plunkett Street, the Crane Lane Theatre and the small warren of bars in the area is a lively late-night venue. There is regular live music and an outdoor smoking area. There's a nice friendly vibe here.

Situated in a small lane between the English Market (hence the "mutton") and St. Patrick's Street, the Mutton Lane Inn is a cozy spot for a drink during the day and social area at night. The clientele can be an eclectic mix of young, old, colourful and more. Children under 18s are strictly not permitted inside. To me there's little better on a rainy day in Cork than finding a spot in the Mutton Lane snug for a pint of Murphy's.

Fred Zeppelins is a heavy rock / metal bar in Cork. If that's your scene then you'll love this place. The customers and staff are very friendly and welcoming to all. Definitely a love-it-or-hate-it place depending on your musical tastes!

Food scene

Sakura is a sushi restaurant situated on Cork's up-and-coming McCurtain street. One of my favourites!

Ichigo Ichie is an absolutely amazing place in a very unassuming building for those who love Japanese food. The restaurant is Michelin-starred. It can be difficult to get a booking so the best advice is to book early. It's on the upper end of the pricing scale, so maybe for that special occasion or treat.

Neighbourhoods

This once neglected part of the city has become rejuvenated in recent years thanks to new bridges connecting the area to Merchants Quay. The area now boasts some great casual dining venues like Sakura and Son-of-a-Bun, high-end restaurants like Greenes, hotels, theatres and pubs.

Oliver Plunkett Street is in the heart of Cork city and is arguably the primary pedestrianised street in Cork. It has a retail offering including clothes, jewelry, hardware stores and well as cafes, pubs, restaurants and coffee shops. There are a dozen or more small streets connecting to St. Patrick's Street and the South Mall that are well worth exploring.
