The Award Winning Varias Restaurant, Conference and Function Centre, together with the Banca Ridge Vineyard and Cellar Door, is open to the public for lunch from 11am to 2pm, 5 days a week (Tuesday – Saturday) and dinner from 5.30pm on Friday and Saturday evenings. Donnelly’s Castle is only about 10 minutes’ drive away and is a good example of the granite boulders and outcrops that the area is known for. Legend has it that it was a hideout for Captain Thunderbolt. The walking tracks are easy-to-moderate and the view from the top of the rock is amazing – a good vantage point for a bushranger to see the constabulary coming.

Donnelly’s Castle is only about 10 minutes’ drive away and is a good example of the granite boulders and outcrops that the area is known for. Legend has it that it was a hideout for Captain Thunderbolt. The walking tracks are easy-to-moderate and the view from the top of the rock is amazing – a good vantage point for a bushranger to see the constabulary coming.
For a good view of the town and surrounding areas you can drive up to Mt Marlay Lookout in town, which also has recently renovated, easy grade walking tracks.

Unlike other national parks in Queensland, Girraween National Park replaces rainforests with rocks, making it a completely different experience to its southern neighbours. Within its 11,800 hectares you’ll find a scattering of granite boulders, balancing in gravity defying positions. Take Balancing Rock for instance – the giant boulder that looks like it’s teetering on a mountaintop, resting on a base that looks to be the size of a dinner plate. If you’ve time and energy on your side, take the 15km return walk to Castle Rock, The Sphinx and Turtle Rock, then on to Mount Norman.
The ridge-line track to The Sphinx and Turtle Rock is a little gentler than The Pyramid, promising views of the Granite Belt countryside before arriving at the famous rock formations. From here, if you’re up for a little rock scrambling you can continue onwards a few more kilometres to Mount Norman – the highest point in the national park. The most-famous return route is The Pyramid, which winds its way through Girraween National Park to its most famous attraction, Balancing Rock. This 3.6km return journey takes you to the top of a natural pyramid, where you’ll find Balancing Rock. Getting there is nothing short of a scramble, so expect to be on all fours in parts of the climb. Shoes with strong grip are essential as there are no safety rails on this incline. Remember – if it’s raining or snowing, forget about your climb.
