Neighborhoods

Old Cloverdale is a historical garden suburb, built in the early 1900s. The neighborhood is well loved by locals for its beautiful homes and gardens and I’m continually surprised at how many people have visited, or at least heard of it, around Alabama. Despite growing up here I continue to be surprised by the beauty of the homes, here, and I hope guests are able to enjoy them as much as I do. There are a number of points of interest within the neighborhood, all easily accessible by foot. I would recommend that you walk during the daytime, if weather and time permit, as much of the neighborhood’s charm is in the varied architecture of its homes. At the intersection of Graham and Cloverdale there are a number of small shops, restaurants, and even a service station, easily accessible from the house. Just walk out the back and up the alleyway! Depending on the time of day, Derk’s Filet & Vine, Tomatino’s, Vintage Year, and Vintage Cafe are all excellent dining choices. The Pine Bar is also a good choice for cocktails if you like. There’s no need for a designated driver when the bar is a block from where you’re staying! Another point of interest is Cloverdale Park. The park has several beautiful live oak trees, a track for walkers, and the roads around it have been kept in their original brick-paved state. The park also has an excellent view of the First United Methodist Church, one of the city’s most beautiful places of worship. There are also a number of restaurants and bars along East Fairview Avenue, between its intersections with Cloverdale Road and Boultier Street, as well as the Capri Theater (which often shows little-known indie or classic films) and the Cloverdale Playhouse. Don’t miss Leroy, a small but charming bar with a good selection of drinks hidden behind the Capri Theater. For those who enjoy walking, Huntingdon College’s campus makes for a great stroll. The school’s well-tended grounds boast a gothic style of architecture that is right at home on the edge of Old Cloverdale.

A great walking neighborhood

Old Cloverdale is extremely pedestrian friendly and I encourage you to walk within the neighborhood. However, it is bordered by several busy roads and it will likely be necessary to have access to a vehicle if you intend to go downtown or visit any other parts of the city. If you decide to walk beyond the edges of Old Cloverdale please be careful, and be safe when walking after dark.
