Sightseeing

Set in historic woodland among the river Nidd is Mother Shiptons cave, the birthplace of the famous prophetess. It’s situated next to the petrifying well, where items are turned to stone and is England’s oldest visitor attraction. Good playgrounds too for the kids and a nice walk to see the river from the other side of the bank

Take a stroll down through the castle grounds, or down the hill towards conyngham hall and you will end up on the gorgeous waterside, with its picture perfect views, cafes, ice creams and rowing boats March to October. The ice cream from the marigold at the bottom of Gallon steps is our favourite, and we’d recommend stopping in the black mulberry for a cuppa. Dog friendly!

Hop on one of the regular trains at knaresborough station and be in the Heart of historic York within 25 mins. So much to see from the Minster to the Shambles, historic walls, lovely designer and independent shops as well as being spoilt for choice for places to eat and drink. River cruises are also available as well as hiring your own boat. The York dungeon is a favourite with the kids as is the Jorvik Viking centre. We’d recommend the star inn the city or judges lodgings, or you can of course push the boat out at Betty’s tea rooms

Walks

Super walks from the cottage
Head up to the car park for Nidd Gorge on Ripley Road (about 15 mins walk) and then spend a lovely day exploring the miles of paths. You can stay in the knaresborough part of the gorge, or head out for a good walk into Harrogate or Ripley. Stunning scenery, great for dogs. Not wheelchair accessible for the most part.

A lovely walk from knaresborough through surrounding countryside to the village of Arkendale, with the obligatory stop at the Bluebell pub. You can extend your route to take in Coneythorpe and the Tiger Inn if you’re feeling up for a good long walk - an OS map will see you on the right track. Mostly off road and great for dogs. Both pubs dog friendly.
