Food scene

Great atmosphere, local brews & food options! This is where the locals go to hangout! Kenai River Brewing is a brewery, so when you walk in, there is a large standing bar to order their many on-tap options. I recommend scoping out a seat first (they have table inside & an outdoor seating area in the summer!) To order food, head to the counter & they’ll bring your meal out when it’s ready. You can open a tab & then head to the bar to choose a beverage or try a flight to sample several! They also offer growlers & cans to-go.

The Burger Bus is exactly what it sounds like! An unpretentious burger joint set in Old Town Kenai, this family owned bus is a local favorite & the occasional line or wait is well worth their delicious offerings. Walk up & order from the window & then enjoy your meal at the available picnic tables, or take a quick drive to one of the nearby overlook spots with views of Cook Inlet.

여행 팁

경비 절약 방법

Freeze & Ship your own Fish to save BIG!

If you plan to fish while in Alaska, you can save BIG by freezing & shipping your catch yourself! Or save even more by taking 50lb boxes on the airplane as checked baggage! Many local processors are available to conveniently vacuum pack your fish, but they charge a huge premium to ship fish for you! Vacuum packing ranges from $1-2.00/lb of fish. If you plan to ship boxes, visit FedEx directly to avoid the up charges. Many local stores including most grocery stores & hardware locations sell insulated fish boxes ready to pack!

It’s Alaska! If you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes!

Weather in Alaska can change quickly! Be prepared by dressing or bringing layers! It is always a good idea to have a raincoat handy. Nothing ruins a trip faster than being wet & cold! Most Alaskan have a pair of XtraTuffs at all times (the local favorite brand of rubber boots). Invest in or bring a quality rain jacket (the lightweight ones that fold up in your pocket won’t last long if the wind picks up also!) If you get cold easily, a medium jacket/ polar fleece or sweatshirt can save the day! I also recommend a light pair of gloves (polar fleece is great because it dries quickly!)

Driving? Soldotna is 2.5 hours South!

If you are driving to Soldotna from Anchorage, it is one of the most beautiful scenic routes in the world! Here are some tips to help make it a smooth journey! Gas up before you leave! It’s 146 miles from Anchorage to Soldotna. Girdwood Station (63 miles from Anchorage) is the last reliable gas station. Road construction & accidents can significantly delay travel & increase road time. Have snacks & be prepared for longer drive times. Be patient! Be safe & avoid using a lead foot!

Drive with your headlight ON!?

Drive with your headlights ON! Even in the daylight, headlights are used to warn travelers of upcoming road hazards (like Moose or Dall sheep in the roadway). If you see someone flashing their headlights or hazards, SLOW DOWN & be aware.
