Sightseeing

With this walk you could amble just 10 metres from the car and say you’d done it. But how likely is that when those 10 metres take you to one of the most beautiful, long, white sand beaches you’ll likely come across? The Friendly Beaches beg for long, slow exploration. Get some sand between your toes, stare out to sea, or watch the shorebirds. If the surf’s up, you could try out the breaks. Or if surf fishing appeals, there’s enough beach for everyone.

Right in the heart of Swansea is a walk that offers spectacular views across the bay to the Freycinet Peninsula and Schouten Island. Named after the local band of Aboriginal people, it’s an easy 2.3km circuit track. It leaves from Waterloo Beach, skirts the coast around Waterloo Point, then reaches Schouten Beach. Waterloo Point became the site of the first European settlement in Swansea in 1827. The track passes through a shearwater (muttonbird) breeding area. These remarkable migratory birds use burrows in which to breed. They can be seen at dusk in the summer months when they return to their burrows after feeding at sea.
