Shopping

For a real taste of Oaxaca, we suggest the Benito Juarez Mercado. This is truly a treasure and a must if you want to immerse yourself in culture. We believe it’s the best place to buy Seafood, fresh Oaxacan cheeses, Mole, Chocolate, Fruit, Veggies, Flowers, Tamales, Pottery, Souvenirs and so much more! You can even enjoy an authentic Oaxacan meal there while you enjoy drinking an Agua Fresca or Licuado. Be adventurous and try the Chapulínes (grasshoppers); they’re Crunchy, Spicy, Salty and a delicacy with very high protein! Remember to bring pesos and your own shopping bags! You’re welcome to use ours located in the laundry room. :)

Getting Around

Car rentals can be quite expensive, so if renting a car is not within your budget, you can easily find affordable public transportation via Taxi's and/or Colectivo's (shared rides where you hop in the back of a covered pick-up truck). Not many places rent out bikes, but you may find one available for rent on the Zicatela beach strip or possibly a motorbike. A taxi from the airport to anywhere in Puerto Escondido should be no more than $70 pesos. Once here, you can take a green cab or colectivo, both are quite inexpensive. It will cost less than $50p for taxi within Puerto, and colectivo's cost no more than $10p per person.

Sightseeing

Everybody who follows surfing knows the Mexican Pipeline. This spot produces one of the biggest & fastest wave in the world. The beach has the same name as the surf spot, Zicatela. This surf spot is just for experienced surfers & partially they even struggle with it. Broken boards & even bones are pretty normal at this beast of a wave. This beach is NOT recommended for swimming or the beginner surfer so please do not underestimate this beach. Beginner surfers who don't have experience shouldn’t paddle out–for their own safety and for the safety of other surfers.

Food Scene

Everything on the menu is delicious. Especially their egg variations and smoothies are a great snack after surfing or the perfect desayuno (breakfast).

El Cafecito is a firm favorite for breakfasts offering big breakfasts, yummy local coffee, fresh juices, smoothies and freshly baked pastries. There is a 2nd location on the Rinconada which is closer to the Casa but without the ocean view. 954 582 0516

This is where we purchase all our coffee. This company is run by a local family who are doing their best to produce excellent, organic coffee, freshly roasted on site. They sell wonderful coffee beans and grind them fresh to your preference. They also sell locally produced chocolate, mole, peanut butter, honey, jam as well as other products. The café is a great place to meet locals and foreigners who are living in Puerto Escondido. Our Hot & Cold favorites are: Cappuccino with Coconut Milk w/a sprinkle of cinnamon and a Mocha Frappé (no sugar needed). Call us to reserve a special tasting!

For the best FROYO in Mexico (in our opinion) we highly recommend Kühl Frozen Yogurt. It’s located on Playa Zicatela so it has a killer view, making it a superb place to watch the surfers, rolling waves and the most amazing sunsets.

If you want authentic and affordable food. This is the place to go. In fact, this is where our family got to eat. Our kids would eat here every night if they could. Their Tlayudas and Tacos Dorados are the best in town in our book. Open only evenings as of 6:30pm. Closed Mondays. La Juquileña (not listed via google) is another place we recommend. It's located in town behind Mercado Benito Juarez. Open daily and closes around 5:00pm.

Everything Else

La Punta is located at Zicatela's far southern end where the surf is more mellow. A left point that is really fun. Aside from the beach, it has everything you need such as mini-supermarkets, restaurants, surf shops, surf board rentals and bars. All this is located on a small sandy road, which gives the whole village a unique vibe compared to the rest of Puerto Escondido.
