Sightseeing

Located right outside Santa Tecla. Approximately 45 minutes away from us. Nice place to spend a day trip. Various restaurants on the road up the volcano for all budgets. Once you get to the parking area, you can pay to hike up to the rim overlooking the crater. Cooler temps and gorgeous views. Trail is well maintained. The whole volcano has been commercialized with businesses, restaurants and even amusement park areas.

About 1 1/2 hours from our home. Formed in a natural volcanic caldera, the waters of Lake Coatepeque are stunningly blue. Many visitors enjoy relaxing in the hot springs found along the edges of the lake, while others prefer to swim or fish. Jet ski rentals and tour boats are also available for rent/hire. You can also charter a boat to take you to the island, Teopan, once considered sacred by the Mayans. Restaurants aplenty along the lake shores but can't really say the food at any we've tried is great

About 2 hours from our house. Just under 30 miles away from San Salvador is Ilamatepec Volcano, also called the Santa Ana Volcano. The site features four volcanic calderas; a stone hollow formed when magma empties during an eruption. The smallest of these has filled with water, creating a beautiful crater lake. Ilamatepec last erupted in 2005, so bring thick-soled shoes and step carefully! But if you're not up to hiking it up, there are plenty of places to admire it from a distance

About an 1 1/2 hour from our house. Often called the Pompeii of South America, Joya de Cerén was a pre-Colombian farming community wiped out by a volcanic eruption. And like its Roman counterpart, layers of volcanic ash preserved the site remarkably well. Though much of the location remains an active archaeological site, the government maintains a section for outside visitors. Open eight hours a day; visitors are welcome to walk among these ancient buildings and imagine what life was like over a thousand years ago.

About 20 minutes from our house. This is Surf City, a 2 street town popular with surfers and backpackers. It's the definition of a beach town with plenty of bars, eateries and shops. Lots of tourists go so expect tourist prices at certain spots. Roads are very narrow, 2 way traffic on a 1 lane road, and shared with pedestrians so drive carefully. Front line spots along the beach is the loud party scene. Further back is more chill surfer vibe. Wear sturdy shoes and mind your ankles if you're here for the beach. The beach is very rocky, unlike the sandy beaches we have at EastSky Villa. Even the boardwalk has some sections that are made up of loose rocks

About an hour and a half from our house. Named for the wildflowers that grow roadside (at their best from November to February), this Flower Route leads you through some of the most beautiful villages in El Salvador. From Sonsonate you drive for some 25mi (40km), through Juayúa, Ataco, Apaneca and Ahuachapán. We love all these little towns. Along the way, you’ll pass coffee plantations (fincas), Spanish-colonial buildings, towering churches, weekend markets and great little pit-stops for food, not to mention stunning views of waterfalls and coffee plantations. You’ll have more independence if you self-drive, but the trail can also be covered by bus.

About an hour or so from our house. What used to be a volcano 1,500 years ago is now a blue expanse of freshwater in central El Salvador. At an altitude of 1,450ft (442m), edged by towering cliffs, it is much loved by divers and boating enthusiasts. An eruption, sometime between CE 410 and CE 535, shattered the cone, killing and displacing hundreds of thousands of people for miles around. The bowl-like caldera that remained filled to form the 28sqmi (72sqkm) Lake Ilopango. Travelers are bewitched by its serene beauty, and locals dive for fish in waters that fall away to 787ft (240m) or more.

About 20 minutes from the house. Good food and beer set on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. Location has a pool and also tidals pools. Nice to have a meal looking at the same sunset as you get from our house. Very cool experience.

About 40 minutes away from our house. We always stop in Santa Tecla for a night or two during our trips down here. And La Skina is somewhere we choose to grab at least 1 meal. It's sort of a food court/strip mall with a variety of restaurants of all cuisines. Super clean and has parking lot. Everything from traditional Salvadoran meals to chain restaurants. Just stroll and browse menus until you find something you crave.

About an 1 1/2 hour from the house. This town can be noted categorized for sightseeing and food scene. Juayua, a town along the Ruta de las Flores, hosts a food festival every weekend in the main plaza. Locals prepare traditional dishes such as pupusas, grilled beef, or savory rice, but more adventurous foodies can sample rabbit, lizard, iguana, snake, and even guinea pig! For the freshest fare, visit around noon, and don't forget to try the drinks, too. Plenty of vendors for souvenir shopping as well Also close is the waterfalls. Hire a Tuk Tuk or go with a capable 4WD vehicle. The road there is seriously rough, especially during rainy season. The waterfall is on a power plant property and requires approximately a 15 minute hike down from the gate. Just be prepared, There may be locals at the gate who "unofficially" charge you entry/tour fee.

About 15 minutes or so from our house. Nice long pier with lots of fresh seafood for sale as well as restaurants all over the place. Lots of stores and cheap eateries as well. Food court next to the fish market has a bunch of restaurants serving fresh, cheap seafood. We've tried 5 of them and honestly all their menus are pretty much the same. Sunset Park Amusement park just completed. The area is constantly being updated and built up these last couple of years. Fish mongers will cut your fish for you and others will cook what you bought if that’s what you want. We normally buy and bring home for Marisol to cook up for us. Early morning is when the fresh catch comes in and locals haggle over the price. A warning about the traffic. If you are coming in to town during the weekend or at peak hours, be prepared for a long wait in traffic!

We'll list this because it's a popular spot but personally not a fan at all. About 20 minutes from the house. Another restaurant perched on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific along the coastline on CA-2. A little more upscale and pricier than Candejo Brewing but more traditional food choices with a lot of different cocktails and cerviches. Terrible slow service and watered down, sugar-loaded drink. Too many items on the menu so it feels very mass produced in comparison to other spots. Very few menu items are consistent or good. The spot is more for the image than the actual food, drinks, or service...

Good food with a great view, especially at sunset. Much better food and drinks than Beto's next door. A lot less pretentious as well. There are 3 locations but this specific one is closest to EastSky Villa. Happy Hour from 3 to close during the week which is perfect to catch the sunset

Small local surfer owned spot. We eat there every time we go to El Tunco. Small menu but they do every item we've ever ordered well. Drinks are really well made as well.

Family Fun

About 40 minutes from the house. I guess if you really get bored of laying on our perfect beach or lounging by our private pool...OR YOU HAVE KIDS...you can spend a day at Atlantis. Nothing grand our high tech but the kids will have a blast with slides, lazy river and animal exhibits. Edit. Apparently, neglect has set in and we were told the place is looking runned down. Will check for ourselves and update.

SEASONAL. About 30 minutes from our house. A turtle conservatory. Rescues and hatches eggs and releases them back into the ocean. Donations to visit supports a great cause. You can make a donation and help with the release. Something very unique to experience for kids and adults alike. UPDATE: Recently, we at EastSky Villa have joined the turtle conservation efforts. Our staff watches for nesting turtles to relocate and protect the eggs from poachers and predators. We also will purchase eggs from the poachers when possible to hatch them safely on our property. Upon hatching, we safely release the baby turtles back to the ocean. Many guests have been able to join us in this amazingly rewarding experience.

Grocery Store

SuperSelectos, El Faro is Largest supermarket in the area, about 10 minutes from the house toward the port. We usually stop in before getting to the house to get groceries and have Dona Marisol cook during our stay. Pollo Campero is across the street so we always make sure we grab our fix of that when we make our grocery runs
