St. George's Sightseeing

Top Attractions in St. George's, Grenada WI
Views of St. George's, the lovely Carenage, the harbor, and Fort George can be had first thing in the morning. Go in the evening, while the sun is setting over the sea, to see (maybe) a stunning sunset, with the hills behind you bathed in light. The south-western peninsula, the airport, the roofs of St. George's University, Grand Anse Beach, and small Glovers Island, which was temporarily utilized for whaling in the 1920s, can all be seen at any time of day. In July and August, the entrance will be decked with scarlet blossoms from Flamboyant trees. Look across the street at our prison, which has the second-best view of the southern portion of the island. Fort Frederick is easily accessible, being about 7 mins or 3.5 km from the Mt. Parnassus Inn. from the center of St. George's, though very, very uphill of it.

Many Mt. Parnassus Inn visitors that have wandered the narrow streets of St. George's say that it's almost like walking through an oil painting. The vivid, brightly painted houses exude an aura of colonialism. In fact, Grenada's capital city—located 7 min. from the Mt. Parnassus Inn on Grenada Island's southwestern shore—has earned the unofficial title of the most beautiful harbor town in the Caribbean. Devote an hour or two to exploring St. George's marina (known as the Carenage), where you'll find plenty of restaurants serving up local cuisine with a side of spectacular views. But there's much more to this city than its postcard-worthy appearance. St. George's serves as a great place to get a whirlwind introduction to Grenadian culture. Discover the islands' colonial history at Fort Frederick and Fort George and learn about local spices at Market Square.

When it comes to souvenir shopping, you can't go wrong with a visit to Market Square. Located only 7 min. bus/car ride in the heart of St. George's, Market Square welcomes visitors and locals alike looking for handmade crafts, fresh produce, and, of course, spices. One TripAdvisor user calls the spice market the "best smelling market that I have ever been to!" However, some recent visitors warn that the vendors can be fairly aggressive. You'll find Market Square at the foot of Young Street. Weekends—Saturdays specifically—are the best times to go, as the marketplace bustles more than usual.

French in the 1600s, and originally named Fort Royal, it was renamed Fort George in 1763, in honor of King George III when the British took possession of the island. It is basically a small bastion tracer fort, which means that each level can give covering fire for the other level, and has been in constant use in one form or another since it has been built. It was once the heart of the town, but as the town has grown and times have changed, it has been relegated to being used as a simple extensive building. Currently, it houses the Royal Grenada Police force but has sections that are open to the public. The 360-degree views are spectacular.

Parks & Nature

The island of Grenada is often overlooked when compared to bigger and presumably-better, Caribbean islands. In this case, this small isle makes quite a compelling case for itself, with its charming hilly terrain. Known as the Spice Isle, Grenada is one of the biggest producers of spices, providing the world with lots of cinnamon, turmeric, cloves, and ginger! Visitors to these shores are often compelled to find out more about its colorful history and to experience its wonderful beaches and other natural attractions.
Grand Anse is "the granddaddy" of Grenada's 45 beaches, but that's an understatement. This two-mile stretch of creamy-white sand overlooks a sheltered, azure-hued bay where bright red and yellow fishing boats burst with color. Numerous hotels, restaurants, and shops act as a convenient backdrop to this postcard-perfect scene, making this a great home base for sun-seeking visitors. Recent Mt. Parnassus Inn visitors love this beach, but they do warn that local vendors' aggressive sales pitches can put a damper on a relaxing day in the sun. To avoid any conflicts, just sternly say "No, thank you" (unless you actually want to make a purchase). Grand Anse Beach lies along the southwestern coast of Grenada Island, roughly six miles south of St. George's. You can reach the beach by car, minibus, or water taxi. You're welcome to explore the beach at any time, day or night free of charge.

You can only spend so many hours lounging on the beach before you start to get restless; when that time comes, stretch your legs along the hiking trails in Grand Etang National Park & Forest Reserve. Occupying a large portion of central Grenada Island, Grand Etang teems with exotic wildlife. Its full-time residents include armadillos, mona monkeys, and tropical mockingbirds. You're sure to encounter these magnificent creatures and more as you explore popular areas as Mount Qua Qua—known for its stunning views of the park—and the beautiful Grand Etang Lake. One of the most popular hikes leads to Seven Sisters Falls, located about 1.25 miles north of the Grand Etang Visitors Center. Visitors describe both the trail and the falls as particularly scenic. However, many warn that the trail can be challenging, so bring sturdy footwear and plenty of stamina! Before you hit the trails, stop by the Visitors Center to pick up a map of the park; the Visitors Center welcomes visitors Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on weekends when cruise ships are docked. You may be asked to pay a fee to hike here, but you won't have to spend more than $3 to $6 XCD ($1 to $2 USD).

Grenada offers travelers a seemingly endless variety of experiences. One of the most magical is snorkeling or diving at the Underwater Sculpture Park in Grenada’s Molinere Bay. The park was designed in 2007 by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, who later created similar installations around the world. The Underwater Sculpture Park in Grenada has been listed as one of the Top 25 Wonders of the World by National Geographic.

Grenada Hash House Harriers The Grenada Hash House Harriers must run rain or shine, hurricane or heat. You may sightsee, get some exercise, and mingle with people from various backgrounds and nationalities, which makes for intriguing discussion and a fun social time all at the same time. A fantastic weekly event for runners, joggers, walkers, and even strollers of all ages and fitness levels that takes place all year round. For those interested in photography, exploring distant sections of the island, adventure, and a lot of laughs, this is a fantastic chance. This non-competitive exercise was created by expatriates in Malaysia in the 1930s for fun and fellowship. It now has over 1600 Hash Chapters throughout the world. The Grenada Hash House Harriers were started in 1985 by Paul “Rigor Mortis” Slinger and attract over 100 people at times. The ‘hashers’ assemble on Saturday afternoon, after the heat of the day has passed, at a previously planned rural destination, which could be anywhere on our lovely island of Grenada. The two groups of hashers, runners and walkers, led by a leader and accompanied by the hare, gently move out in the quest to follow the correct five to seven-mile trail through the countryside – and back to base! With a few words from the Hash Master, the two groups of hashers, runners and walkers, led by a leader and accompanied by the hare, gently move out in the quest to follow the correct five to seven-mile trail through the countryside – and The hares will have already marked trails for the hounds to follow with flour. Some of the roads are genuine, while others are a ruse. The latter is reassuringly confirmed by the sound of a horn and the command “ON-ON” — everyone follows suit.

Drinks & Nightlife

Given that Grenada is a sleepy little Caribbean island, its nightlife is surprisingly lively. That is in no small part thanks to the large population of foreign students at St George's University, whose campus is in the southwest of the island. Having a good night out is all about being in the right place on the right night, as most bars and clubs have live music and DJs only on certain evenings.
When your tongue tingles for a taste of local libation, make your way to the River Antoine Rum Distillery. River Antoine has been churning out bottles of rum since 1785, making it the oldest functioning water-powered distillery in the Caribbean. Guided tours will lead you through the rum-making process, from the harvesting of sugar cane to the fermentation to the bottling process. After the tour, you'll be treated to a free sample, but be warned: This isn't your average liquor. "They make a rum so strong that it cannot be taken home on an airplane. "After trying it, you can understand why!" (River Antoine rum is produced in strengths of 138- and 150-proof. Should you want to bring some home, a less potent version is available for purchase.) You'll find the River Antoine Rum Distillery on the northeast coast of Grenada Island near Lake Antoine, roughly an hour's drive from Mt. Parnassus Inn. Tours are offered Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for $5 XCD (about $2 USD).

Overlooking St. George's Harbour, on the north side of the Carenage, BB's Crabback features Grenadian and West Indian dishes prepared with a special flair. Born in Grenada and trained in England, Chef BB (Brian Benjamin) turns out some of the best meals in town. Crabback (local land crab) is a house specialty, of course, but you'll want to try some of his seafood dishes, as well. Prawns in the lobster sauce come to mind. Or try the signature curried goat dish, the breast of chicken marinated in 12 herbs and spices, the pan-fried barracuda in a crab and lobster sauce, or oildown (Grenada's national dish). Dining is alfresco here, and the views of the harbor and out to sea are nothing short of spectacular. It's definitely a premier place to go for lunch or dinner in downtown St. George's. BB's Crabback is located only 8 min. drive from the Mt Parnassus Inn.

The original General hospital was located directly below Fort George overlooking the city of St. George’s; it was built by the British and was used as a Military Hospital. Shortly after it was built, Grenada was captured by the French who occupied the island for four years before it was recaptured by the English. The hospital remained a military hospital under both French and British until 1864 when it was converted to civilian use.

The hospital remained a military hospital under both French and British until 1864 when it was converted to civilian use.
Spice Isle Imaging Centre is Grenada's first medical imaging service center. In operation since July 2004, we have assisted our physicians to make numerous accurate, life-saving diagnoses. The Centre was founded by Dominic Paul. While visiting a friend in the hospital who was waiting to travel abroad to have a CT Scan performed, Dominic realized the need in Grenada for medical imaging services, and the idea for Spice Isle Imaging Center was born.
