Romance

Hyde Memorial State Park (dubbed Hyde Park), just a short ride from downtown Santa Fe, is a great place to spend a romantic day or evening. One local young woman said that it was her make-out spot of choice when she was in high school. Bet she wasn't the only one. If you're outdoor types, you'll love the hiking trails leading to great views. Take a picnic lunch, find a private spot in the woods and tuck in. In winter, don a pair of snowshoes and head up a trail. At night, you can sit outside and watch the stars overhead.

Spa time can be very romantic. Couple it with private Japanese-style soaking tubs and you're onto something. Ten Thousand Waves sitting on the mountainside minutes from Santa Fe is a great option for romance. Book early! Tubs and treatments at this destination spa, popular with both locals and tourists, get booked way in advance. Want the most romantic tub? Book Waterfall, one of their "premium" soaking tubs. Their website calls it "the closest thing to bathing in a wild hot spring in the woods." After your soak, try a relaxing spa treatment. Their signature treatment, a four hands massage, is pure bliss. In summer, you're sure to see hummingbirds. End your spa day with dinner at Izanami, their izakaya-style small plate restaurant.

Ever since Adam and Eve, gardens have been places for romance. The Santa Fe Botanical Garden on Camino Lejo (Museum Hill), is a romantic setting for lovers. The Orchard Garden, opened in July 2013, has romantic spots throughout. Bring a picnic lunch with you. Pick a romantic spot on one of the benches scattered throughout and feed each other tasty morsels. Enjoy the profusion of colorful plants that thrive in the arid high desert gardens. There's even a drought tolerant version of a romantic English Garden here. Hold hands as you walk across the old bridge that was brought to the site from Las Vegas, New Mexico. Want to pop the age-old question? The Rose Ramada is the perfect place. The garden, with perfect west-facing views can also host a glorious sunset wedding (or engagement or anniversary party).

As America’s third largest producer of “Methode Champagnoise” sparklers, the Gruet family also is known for some of the best. Procure a bottle of their complex, and incredibly affordable, “Blanc de Noir”, named one of Wine Spectator’s “Top 100 Wines in the World” to complete a picnic even Cupid himself couldn’t resist. Not in a hurry? Stick around for a tasting flight and choose your favorite the old fashioned way…

Reserve a traditional Tatami table or a cozy booth for an upscale “Izakaya” dining experience where small plates designed for sharing; and are encouraged to be ordered as slowly as one’s appetite dictates and paired with a tasting flight from the restaurant’s extensive collection of sakes. When weather permits, request a table on the patio and sit with your love and enjoy the evening sunset and sparkly stars. It's incredible.

Just around the corner on tiny Shelby Street, resides our top pick for truly indulgent and romantic dining, Sazon. Presided over by culinary alchemist Chef Fernando Olea, this venue oozes romance. I mean for goodness sake, where else can you find Olea’s magical elixir, “Sopa de Amour”, literally, The Soup of Love? Sip craft Mescals surrounded by world class art reflecting the venue’s unique marriage of modern creativity and old school Mexican heritage. Nothing exemplifies forgotten traditions more than the the tiny ottomans respectfully placed at the feet of purse carrying guests, as a lady should never have to hang her precious cargo on the back of a chair or dare we say, put it directly on the floor! You will feel wooed from start to finish at Santa Fe’s favorite fine dining adventure.

Not ready to go home yet? Though Santa Fe is not exactly known for it’s late night scene, there is one venue in Santa Fe that keeps the romance going into the wee hours. Tucked away on Water Street is art deco inspired Tonic, named by Architectural Digest as “The Most Beautiful Bar” in the state. Unwind in the dimly lit space that gives a nod to a different era to the rhythm of live Jazz while indulging in one of proprietor Winston Greene’s every changing daily menu of inspired libations. We could go on. No matter the time of day or style of celebration, Santa Fe is steeped in romance, welcoming amorous visitors with open arms. We know you’ll find your bliss here.

For many people of a certain age, their first romantic encounter was a furtive arm over the back of the seat at the local movie house. The intimate Jean Cocteau Cinema takes it one step further. One of the most romantic ways to watch a film in public is to rent the private, soundproof VIP room at the Cocteau. Not only will you have privacy but you can order drinks and even food delivered to your private lair during the screening. The theater, owned by George R.R. Martin of "Game of Thrones" fame is more than a movie house. They also host author talks, live music and even magic shows. If you pay the surcharge on all four seats, the space is all yours for the show.

When the Loretto Chapel was completed in 1878, there was no way to access the choir loft twenty-two feet above. Carpenters were called in to address the problem, but they all concluded access to the loft would have to be via ladder as a staircase would interfere with the interior space of the small Chapel. Legend says that to find a solution to the seating problem, the Sisters of the Chapel made a novena to St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters. On the ninth and final day of prayer, a man appeared at the Chapel with a donkey and a toolbox looking for work. Months later, the elegant circular staircase was completed, and the carpenter disappeared without pay or thanks. After searching for the man (an ad even ran in the local newspaper) and finding no trace of him, some concluded that he was St. Joseph himself, having come in answer to the sisters' prayers. Three mysteries surround the spiral staircase in the Loretto Chapel: the identity of its builder, the type of wood used, and the physics of its construction. It is still one of the best unsolved mysteries to this day.
