The views from the peak of Ghana’s highest mountain top are worth the brutal 3 mile hike up. At an elevation of 2900 feet you will see the 360 degree view of nearby mount Aduadu, and the borderline of Ghana’s neighboring nation Togo. Pro tip, start the hike early so you finish off with a dip in the waterfall at the base of the mountain, which is about 1-2 miles from the base. Also enjoy the hike, take your time and stop regularly for rest breaks. Tours can be arranged a day ahead at the ranger base. Don’t forget to tip your guide! The mountain is home to more than 33 species of mammals and about 300 butterfly species live in the ecological region. With Afadjato, the journey is about endurance, not speed. Enjoy the breathtaking feeling of reaching the summit on your own terms!

This is a must do on your way to Mount Afadjato! The monkeys are beautiful to observe and you can feed some of the friendlier ones after your guided tour. The entire walk is about 45mins to and hour. Pro tip, enjoy the forest canopy during your walk through the sanctuary, don’t bring loud speakers or make too much noise so you can hear the natural sounds, and leave all valuables and hanging accessories in the car as they can be picked off my curious juvenile monkeys who are very active and friendly! 🐵🙈🙉🙊

Best way to get around...

The N1 Highway (Accra-Aflao Road) takes you directly to the property from Accra. It's a 35 minute straight drive from the property to Accra with light traffic. Best way around is by car, motorcycle, scooter, or by local motorbike (also named Okadas). *During rush hour (5-9a 4-6p), travel time to Accra can increase up to an hour. We recommend taking Okadas, motorbikes and scooters as they are faster during rush hour or plan trips ahead of rush.

Secret farmers market with fresh produce...

While I was looking for a farmer's market, the owner of the blue supplies kiosk directly opposite Mt. Calvary Hospital gave me directions to this local farmers market. Fresh produce, meat and and local fruits and veggies were available to purchase. Prices are on average 3-5% lower than in grocery stores. Directions: https://goo.gl/maps/YoEDvBRMXrRkYYDP9. Don't forget to to bargain lightly on prices as a local custom! Enjoy! This secret spot will only be discovered by those you took the time to read the guidebook ;)

Travel Essentials for Ghana

When coming to Ghana, the following items will make your stay comfortable and help acclimate to Ghana’s infrastructure, which can be very different from abroad. These items have made my trips back home much easier during the first few days of adjusting: travel chargers (tip: solar powered adds flexibility), voltage converters/transformers, a few bottles of travel size filtered water (pack in check in bag not carry on), at least $100 in cash (smaller bills $20s, $10s, $5s), flip flops, sneakers or comfortable walking shoes, travel size first aid kit, mosquito repellents.

Using Mobile Money aka “Momo” to pay for services and goods.

Ghana has multiple payment channels for payment of goods and services. One popular method is known as mobile money or “momo” as it is called locally. With momo you can pay for services and goods at local grocers and major retailers using a mobile number from the US or UK linked to your account or debit card. I use the secure Sendwave app for my momo payments in Ghana. Sendwave is free to download, and has no transaction fees. Available on IOS or Android. Other momo services are available like Vodaphone cash and MTN. Always use safety when sending momo, know the person you’re sending it to!
