Sightseeing

Some say it’s an easy hike, others say it’s a medium hike. I’m with the former, but believe it’s my favorite so far! The trail to Opal Lake is 1.2 miles, one way, making it just over 2 miles round-trip. The trail enters the South San Juan Wilderness, Colorado's least visited wilderness area at about 1 mile in. A portion of the trail has quick elevation gain before it traverses an open meadow to the lake, passing through old-growth aspen groves. Wooded hillsides and a sheer mountain face border the lake.

Piedra River Trail

Take Piedra Rd out past Hatcher Lake onto Forest Service Road 631. On the left there will be pull outs to view the canyon just past the long rolling hills. Trail head is just after crossing Piedra River. Two trails start here. I've hiked the left/lower River Trail. My "Spring Flow" painting is from here.

Reservoir Hill Park

This awesome park is just a block off of the main street and near the visitor center, but feels miles away. The trailhead behind the post office leads to moderately difficult trails and a disc course, and the trailhead just down the hill leads to the Tenderfoot Trail, which is an easy trail that leads to the top of Reservoir Hill. One-half mile up is a large wood gazebo. About 50 yards from the gazebo are outdoor toilets that are well-maintained. From there you can hike another 1/2 mile up to an observation deck looking over downtown. From the trailhead to the top is a 630 foot climb.

Fourmile Falls Trail

I've yet to go on this one. I recommend it for avid hikers. Read reviews on TripAdvisor before committing. Sounds Beautiful!!!
