Food scene

This place is famous for its Bohemian lager beer, although I don’t drink so I can’t vouch for it specifically. If you are in the mood for old-world European food, it can’t be beat for that. Whether you’re partial to schnitzel and spätzle or prefer burgers and pizza, you can be accommodated here, and everything is delicious. The ambience is a particular feature of the experience here.

This place is infused with the warmth of the South Pacific, from its savory meat pies to the traditional sticky Samoan coconut sweet rolls. Everything is jaw-droppingly beautiful and just as delicious. Located next to the Red Corner China Diner, it is a great place to swing by on your way home from shopping or sightseeing to pick up a quick snack or a full meal. You will not regret indulging yourself every now and again. Closed Sundays.

There are many Mexican restaurants in the area, but this is my favorite. I’m glad it’s so close! You really can’t go wrong here. Everything I’ve had is very tasty. I am partial to the tostada and the torta. Closed on Sundays.

This is a great place for breakfast or lunch located very close to Kneaders (they are closed in the evenings). It’s one of those places where you feel like everyone in the restaurant gathers there often, and you are part of their group. Again, you can’t go wrong with any of their delicious options. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

A popular dining theme in the area is the Brazilian steakhouse, or churrasco. This is for the intrepid carnivore, as the dining model involves roving servers with giant skewers of meat, and you get as much as you want. There are a number of small chains in the area with a similar paradigm, such as Rodizio Grill and Tucanos Brazilian Grill. They are all good, but Braza is our favorite, and also the closest. For the (slightly) lighter eater, there is a salad bar-only option at a lower price point, and I often choose that. There is plenty of meat, and many other delectables, in the salad bar. At Braza, most of the staff is from Brazil, so you can practice your Portuguese if you want. Closed Sundays.

When I was in college I had to travel all the way from Provo to the University of Utah area to go to the Pie after the Provo location closed in 1992. Luckily, they have expanded again and we now have two of their delicious locations super close by—in Midvale and South Jordan. This is a Utah staple, not to be missed. You will especially love the cheese pull-aparts dipped in ranch or marinara. My favorite pizza is the Greek. They have vegan cheese too, and it is quite good. Sometimes I get it just for kicks. It’s a great place to dine in, although they also have takeout and delivery. They sometimes have live music, too.

Sightseeing

The heart of Salt Lake City and the larger Salt Lake Valley, Temple Square is unique among tourist attractions. The home of the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for which it is named, it also houses performance and event venues, museums, restaurants, visitors centers, worship centers, beautiful grounds and gardens, and a comprehensive family history library. Although the temple and surrounding grounds are currently undergoing extensive renovations for a seismic upgrade, it’s worth a visit if at all possible. Here are some features and attractions you can experience while there: Salt Lake Tabernacle This remarkable building was constructed in the 1860s and ’70s to provide a space for the early Latter-day Saints to meet together. The acoustics are such that it is possible to address a large congregation without the use of electronic amplification (although a sound system has been installed). It is the home of the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square and its affiliate performing groups, the Orchestra at Temple Square and the Bells at Temple Square. Some combination of those groups, along with the five full- and part-time Tabernacle Organists, normally perform in the Tabernacle at least weekly. Consistent live performances include broadcasts of Music and the Spoken Word on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. and organ recitals each day at noon. Salt Lake Assembly Hall This Victorian Gothic cathedral-style building was built in the 1870s and ’80s as an additional meeting space. It’s my favorite building on Temple Square, although the pews are extremely uncomfortable. But the spires and ceiling, and the beautiful organ, balcony, and choir loft are truly inspiring. I’ve attended several concerts and meetings there and each has been a transcendent experience. Salt Lake Temple When not closed for maintenance, this building is used by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for weekday worship and is closed to the public. However, you can walk around the temple and admire the architecture if you like. One of the young women missionary tour guides can show you around and answer any questions you have about the temple or anything else at Temple Square, or you are welcome to wander the grounds on your own. Joseph Smith Memorial Building This ten-story building is just east of the Temple block. Originally a hotel, it was built in the 1900s and ’10s. It currently houses some offices for Church departments and plenty of banquet and event rooms. The top floor is home to two restaurants, the Roof Restaurant, an upscale buffet open only in the evenings, and the Garden Restaurant, an upscale casual eatery serving lunch and dinner. The ground floor’s Nauvoo Cafe, named for the city Joseph Smith and the early Saints founded on the banks of the Mississippi River in Illinois, provides quick made-to-order meals, featuring sandwiches and salads and its famous turkey pot pie. The Legacy Theater, a small auditorium with a big screen, shows short films related to the Church’s doctrine, scripture, and history. It’s worth it just to step inside the gorgeous lobby and imagine you’re a famous hotel guest from a hundred years ago. Family History Library This research library on the west side of the Temple block is open to the public. Trained, expert volunteers offer free resources and assistance for those who are researching their genealogy. A Discovery Center on the ground floor provides interactive activities for people of all ages to start their exploration of their own family history. A free online resource, familysearch.org, allows anyone and everyone to continue their research from anywhere in the world. Church History Museum This state-of-the-art facility also on the west side of the Temple houses meaningful, thought-provoking exhibits and displays that celebrate and interpret Latter-day Saint legacies from around the world. With immersive cinema you can join the 14-year-old Joseph Smith in his sacred life-changing experience in 1820 that eventually led to the founding of the Church. Displays include pioneer tools, clothing, and other artifacts, as well as more contemporary art exhibits, interactive learning centers, and historical figure depictions. Evening programs feature speakers and performers with a variety of topics. Conference Center To the north of the Temple block is the cavernous conference center, constructed in the late 1990s and dedicated in 2000. The scale of this building has to be seen to be believed. It accommodates 21,000 in comfortable, plush seats and features a sound system that allows each audience member to hear speakers and concert performances with equal and perfect clarity. The organ in this building tops out at 7,708 pipes, although the Tabernacle organ beats it with its 11,623. The Church’s twice-yearly general conference is held here and broadcasted worldwide. It is also the venue for the Tabernacle Choir’s Christmas concert and other concerts throughout the year. A tour of this building will reveal beautiful artwork inside and a stunning rooftop garden (April through October) that pays homage to the Salt Lake Valley in terrain and vegetation. A smaller theater seating 900 and multi-level underground parking facility complete this magnificent structure.

This gorgeous eight-acre property on the Jordan River is more than just a pretty park. Its aim is to model and encourage the adoption of water-wise landscape practices. With over 1,000 native and other water-wise plants, it provides an invaluable service and, honestly, it is a very pretty park too. An education center and referrals to professional landscaping services help residents fully realize their landscape’s water-wise potential. Free admission.

Plenty of farm and play activities for children are the heart of this living historical farm. Equal parts museum, event center, camp, park, and wilderness, there is something for everyone, including a Sunday farmers market from May to October. Open daily, dawn to dusk.

These beautiful grounds showcase plants and outdoor artwork representing over two dozen countries. Conceived and implemented as a woman-directed endeavor in the 1940s and ’50s, Utah groups representing each nation created the gardens to showcase and harmonize the cultural diversity of the state. A visit to this tranquil space next to the Jordan River encourages wandering, meditation, and—dare we hope?—even international peace.

Museums, farm animals, gardens, dinosaurs, butterflies, tulips, luminaria, golf, movies, ice cream, and restaurants, oh my! This is a destination for families and people of all ages, whether you want to meander through the garden paths or hit some balls on its 200-acre golf course. Situated at the point of the mountain between Salt Lake Valley and Utah Valley, it has been a popular attraction since it was developed over 25 years ago as a nonprofit natural-world family education center.

It’s worth the drive to see this other-worldly site in the Great Salt Lake. A variety of species, both mammals and birds, populate this otherwise deserted 28,000-acre space. The annual bison roundup in October is a favorite tradition for many volunteer cowboys and others who enjoy watching and participating in the accompanying festivities.
