This is an ideal family trip out with access to animals and horse riding. DE4 5LH. 4.1 miles from the flat. It is a family friendly open farm with a large selection of animals to see including llamas, goats, peacocks, meerkats, chickens, pigs, alpacas, ducks, and deer to name a few. There are specially designed playgrounds, a go-kart track for the kids and many places for the adults to relax if they wish. Group party bookings and children's birthday parties are also catered for. There is a licensed cafe serving hot food, a classroom and a gift shop. Horse Riding Lessons and Pony Trekking are also available with prior booking.

A pretty market town with the River Wye running through it, the Bakewell Market every Monday and the Farmer's Market on the last Saturday of every month are traditional examples. The famous Bakewell Pudding/Tart can be found in various shops as well as the Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop.

A pretty market town with the River Wye running through it, the Bakewell Market every Monday and the Farmer's Market on the last Saturday of every month are traditional examples. The famous Bakewell Pudding/Tart can be found in various shops as well as the Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop.
Famous for its crooked spire, Chesterfield is Derbyshire's second largest settlement and provides the train gateway to Sheffield. An impressive open market, shopping centre and St Mary's church are nice places to visit.

The main set of pubs, restaurants and later closing venues at weekends is found on Dale Road, DE4 3LT, 0.3 miles from the flat over the river bridge. The adjoining Causeway Lane and Bakewell Road accommodate the other such venues. As stated earlier, the history of our small town and area is quite extensive.

It is a former spa town that has prospered from both the hydrotherapy and cloth mill industries. It was a collection of villages until the herbal springs were discovered in 1698. The population increased rapidly in the 1800s, largely because of the popular hydro's that were being built. At one stage, there were around 20 of them, mostly on Matlock Bank (the area around Smedley Street just up the hill from the flat) with the largest being built in 1853 by John Smedley. This closed as late as 1955 and is now the County Council headquarters. During the Second World War, the site became the National School of Military Intelligence, which operated until 1946. The building featured in Ken Russell’s Oscar-winning 1969 film entitled “Women in Love.”
In 1893, a cable tramway was built along Bank Road to enable access to the Hydro's. Conceived by Job Smith, the tram was inspired by San Francisco’s famous cable cars, and cost £20,000. When it was built, it was the steepest tramway in the world, at a gradient of 1 in 5.5, and it rose to 300 feet. It cost tup-pence to go up and a penny to come down. It closed in 1927 after losing business to cars and buses.
The castle that can be seen on the hill overlooking Matlock is that of Riber Castle, a country house that was built by John Smedley in 1862 as his residence. It was later used as a school in the 1930s and then a food storage site during World War Two. The MoD left following the war and the castle remained unused until the 1960s whereupon it became a wildlife park up until 2000. It was featured in the 2004 film, “Dead Man’s Shoes” and was converted into private apartments in 2016.
