Museums

Please keep in mind these are no where near all the museums in Chicago, just some of the more popular ones and are in no particular order.
The Museum of Science and Industry is probably your best bet for finding something that will be of interest to almost anyone. Some of the exhibits here include: The Science Storms Exhibit (this permanent exhibit lets you observe and experiment with seven natural phenomena: lightning, fire, tornados, avalanches, tsunamis, sunlight and atoms in motion.”), The U-505 Submarine Exhibit (shares with visitors the story of a secret mission to capture a German WWII submarine and let’s you see and explore first hand the huge underwater vessel), The Genetics and Baby Chick Hatchery Exhibit (here you can learn how just four chemical components hold the secret to life and how DNA connects all living things. Explore your genetic roots and discover what makes you, you. Here you can also “Enjoy one of the Museum's most beloved experiences: watching as baby chicks peck out of their shells and take their first steps into the world.”), Other exhibits in the museum: Yesterday’s Main Street (step back in time to 1910 as you explore a vintage dentist office, ice cream parlor, movie theater and more), The Coal Mining Exhibit (“allows you to immerse yourself in the vast and sometimes perilous work of mining for coal as you descend into the depths of Old Ben No. 17 - a real, relocated mine), The Whispering Exhibit (“the acoustic design of the Whispering Gallery lets you talk in the quietest of voices to someone across the room—and be heard perfectly.”), The Art of the Bicycle Exhibit (see old bikes, and the future of bikes at this exhibit - remember banana seats?!), The Henry Crown Space Exhibit (see the technology that took us to the Moon, including the real Apollo 8 module and Aurora 7 capsule. Control a camera to get a look inside the lunar module used for Apollo 11 training, and remote control a Mars rover), The Fast Forward…Inventing the Future Exhibit (explores ideas for future inventions and possibilities), The Farm Tech Exhibit (“sit in the cab of a tractor, or see how fast you can hook up a cow to the milking machine.”). You can see it all and more at the museum of Science and Industry!

One of the oldest and largest art museums in the United States (founded in 1879), this museum boasts a collection of nearly 300,000 works. The entrance to the museum is flanked by two large lion statues. This museum is exceptionally popular and it’s not hard to see why. Not only does it showcase charming pieces of art, but some parts of the interior of the building are pretty enchanting as well (such as the grand staircase). The exhibits, on the other hand, have very simple interiors allowing the art to be the focus. It is truly a beautiful museum and we think well worth a visit.

One of the world’s largest contemporary art venues. This museum was established in 1967 and is devoted to featuring current and innovative works of art that reflect today’s culture. The museum has a very sleek and modern exterior and the inside boasts a spectacularly modern staircase. The artwork here is uniquely captivating, but may not be for those with more traditional taste (who would probably enjoy the art institute of Chicago more).

The Money Museum is located in the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. The museum is free and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00 pm. The Money Museum makes money fun! It has informative displays on the history of American currency, but its more outlandish exhibits are the real attraction. There is a machine that passes old, unusable bills through glass tubes and into a shredder right before visitors’ eyes (Fun fact: the bank regularly shreds around $10 million a day). The resulting money-fetti is then given to the guests as a souvenir. Across from this display, there is a huge glass cube that is stuffed with a million dollars in $1 bills that weighs in at over 2,000 pounds of currency. There are two other million dollar displays just a few feet away in higher denominations that people can take their pictures with. There is also an old elevator shaft that has been filled with over $50,000 in coins, creating a huge money pit guests can stand above on a glass floor.
