Neighborhoods

"Irvington is a historic district five miles east of downtown Indianapolis founded in 1870 by prominent abolitionist lawyers Jacob Julian and Sylvester Johnson. Named for writer Washington Irving and straddling the Historic National Road, the carefully planned neighborhood was originally platted as an independent suburban town but annexed by the city of Indianapolis in 1902." - https://irvingtondevelopment.org/why-we-do/about-irvington/ Irvington is the neighborhood I call home and I love all of the historical homes and friendly neighbors. There are several beloved restaurants in the area, such as Jockamos Pizza and a great brewery where you can grab a drink. Easily accessible by walking or biking, get out and enjoy the winding, tree-lined streets and many local businesses.

The city's first official cultural district extends northeast from downtown along one of the diagonal streets. Although officially named Massachusetts Avenue, it's "Mass Ave" to the locals and has attracted eclectic shops, art galleries, theaters, public art, nightspots and restaurants. Among the latter, check out the Rathskeller.

The first commercial historic district in Indiana. This area, 1.5 mi/2.5 km from downtown, represents more than a century of development from 1871 to the present. It was once dominated by German-American businesspeople and once had more theaters than any other part of Indianapolis. Today, its original buildings house antiques shops, art galleries and restaurants that lead to its fountain in the square. This is one of the few places in the country where you can go duckpin bowling, in which players get three wooden, softball-sized balls per frame to knock down 10 pint-sized pins. One of the city's official cultural districts.

An artsy, eclectic blend of nightclubs, boutiques and restaurants (some with sidewalk seating) draws people to this hip neighborhood about 20 minutes north of downtown. Situated on the canal, the neighborhood is especially popular in warmer months, when people fill the outdoor cafes and sidewalks. It's one of the city's official cultural districts. The heart of the district begins at the intersection of Broad Ripple and College avenues. Contact the Broad Ripple Village Association for more information.

Absolutely phenomenal friend chicken. Seriously, try it if you're on Mass Ave, you will not regret it, even if you have to wait for a table (which you will). Don't skip the spoonbread.

Completed in 1902, this ornate limestone monument in the heart of the city is a tribute to Indiana's Union casualties in the Civil War. From Thanksgiving to January, the monument is festooned in holiday lights. May-October daily 10:30 am-5:30 pm; November-April Friday-Sunday 10:30 am-5:30 pm. The elevator ride to the top of the monument costs US$2 adults, US$1 children, free for seniors and veterans; free if you walk to the top. (The elevator ride down is free.).

An urban trail of 8 mi/13 km connecting six of the Indianapolis Cultural Districts makes it easy to explore the downtown area and attractions by foot. Well-marked, there is an inner loop trail ideal for families. (There are one-way spurs to outlying districts such as Fountain Square.) Walkers and cyclists permitted. A bike share program makes it easy to go for a spur-of-the-moment ride.

"As the Indianapolis Museum of Art has grown to become an internationally renowned museum, we now turn our attention toward increasing our emphasis on combining art with nature. The galleries are surrounded by gardens, water features, over a hundred acres of woodland filled with surprise and beauty. The campus itself is ideal for performances, afternoon walks, kite-flying, cloud-gazing, memory-making, new-idea-having. There’s a mansion to stage unforgettable events, restaurants for relaxing, bars for microbrews and friendships."

The year is always 1836 at Prairietown Village in Fishers, Indiana. Costumed interpreters re-enact history by assuming the roles of fictional yet historically accurate characters from the past. The village is one of six areas at Conner Prairie, which is considered one of the best open-air living-history museums in the U.S. You can also visit the William Conner Homestead (which includes the Federal-style home of Hoosier statesman William Conner), an 1816 Lenape Indian camp, a working farm circa 1886 and PastPort, a hands-on activity area. The museum has a restaurant, gift shop and research library. The indoor exhibits are open year-round. Outdoor historic areas open April-November and for special programs December-March. The Conner Prairie by Candlelight experience is a holiday favorite and draws repeat visitors from across the country.
