Just such a tranquil and peaceful place. Only 5K from house. There are coffee shops, pubs and ice cream van in high season. Nelly & Nancy’s walk worth doing.
Fore Abbey is the ruin of a Benedictine Abbey, situated to the north of Lough Lene in County Westmeath, near Fore village. The abbey was founded by Saint Feichin in 630 CE and functioned for over 900 years. By 665 CE, the abbey is believed to have housed up to 300 Benedictine monks from Normandy and 2000 students.

Great for a hike and not a difficult trek, highly recommended. At the top of climb see the Megalithic Tombs steeped in history. Coffee shop open 200 m down the road from gate into hill. Open until end Oct.
However Lough Crew gardens are open all year around. Separate entrance (google it)

Train from Mullingar to Connelly Station Dublin, if using bus or train book in advance online much cheaper. Bus route through Castlepollard every day also. Pack comfortable footwear and rain gear.
