The Fountain Theatre opened in the historic town of Mesilla, New Mexico back in the year 1905, making it the state’s oldest movie theater. Situated within the Old Mesilla historic district, the theater is located on the very same square as the jail from which Western Legend Billy the Kid had escaped in April of 1881. The Fountain family originally used the theater for vaudeville variety shows. Today, the Fountain Theatre is operated by the non-profit, all-volunteer Mesilla Valley Film Society and regularly shows art film and foreign films to the Mesilla community, with concessions including coffee, ice cream bars, and popcorn.

The Billy the Kid Gift Shop, housed within one of the Mesilla Plaza’s most historic buildings, is certainly one of the most unique things to do in the small town of Mesilla, New Mexico. Visitors should take a bit of time to explore the old latillas and vigas, and simply look at the old adobe building with its 18-inch original mud brick walls. The building is said to of been the home of the state capital, back when the town acted as the capital of the Arizona Territories and New Mexico during the time of the Civil War. 2385 Calle De Guadalupe, Mesilla, NM 88046, Phone: 575-523-5562

The Rio Grande vineyards and Winery can be found within New Mexico’s historic Mesilla Valley, a unique destination where Spanish priests initially established vineyards back during the early part of the 1600’s. With a location just a few miles outside of Old Mesilla and Las Cruces, the Rio Grande Vineyards is an ideal destination for both tourists and locals alike who are looking to have a “true New Mexico experience.” The vineyard is made up of twelve varietals, and the Tasting Room features numerous old photographs depicting the Mesilla area and grand views of the scenic Organ Mountains from the patio.

Located within a quaint house made from adobe, Josefina's Old Gate Cafe is a long-time symbol of welcome and warmth in the town’s historic Mesilla Plaza. Guests can stop and admire the front gate, which dates back to the 1930’s and enjoy a glass of wine, a light meal, or coffee on the sunny patio or in the exquisitely restored parlor. Josefina's Old Gate Cafe is open for both breakfast and lunch between the months of March and October from 8:00am until 5:00pm. From November to February, the charming patio cafe is open from 8:00am until 3:00pm.

My favorite hiking close to home.

The Picacho Peak summit climbs to 4,959 feet above sea level and provides stunning views of Southern New Mexico. It is a great hike and takes approximately 45 minutes to ascend and 30 minutes to descend. The peak is over 9 million years old, even older than the Organ Mountains that tower to the east. Contrary to popular belief, Picacho Peak was never an active volcano. It was formed from flow-banded rhyolite which gives many of the canyons and arroyos a distinctive blue color. Making its place in history, Picacho Peak was a major landmark on the Butterfield Trail and was part of the Gadsden Purchase in 1854. Picacho Peak is part of a 13,000 acre designated recreation area, preventing the landmark from ever being used for anything other than non-motorized recreation. The peak, maintained by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), is still part of a grazing lease for cattle. You’ll feel like a genuine part of Old West history as you hike the peak with cattle grazing in the distance. The BLM is currently working on improvements including a trail-head parking area, trail improvements, and a trail map.

My husband attempted the climb twice and peaked on the second hike. This hike is physically demanding going up. Incredibly mentally demanding going down. His first attempt was with his adult son, brother and friend. His second hike was with the Ocotillo Hikers of Las Cruces. He definitely benefitted hiking with the experienced Ocotillo Hikers! The trail is incredibly tough, one of the hardest hikes he has ever done. The terrain is difficult to traverse because of all of the loose rock, gravel, and dirt. There are markers guiding you up but you still need to be aware so as not to go off trail. There is minimal bush whacking if you stay on the trail. The group was in good physical shape and entire trip took 10 hours, 5 up and 5 down. We all drank 5 liters of water and could have had more. The hike down can be miserable. You'll be sliding on your butt for most of it because the rocks, gravel, and dirt will give way and cause you to slip and fall. Due to the long slopes, sliding is the best option. Constantly doing your best to not fall down the mountain for 5 hours in the heat is mentally challenging. Trekking poles and gloves a must. Do not do this hike if you're new to hiking. Do not do this hike if you aren't in peak shape. Do not do this hike if you don't have strong boots. Do not do this hike if you don't have 5+ liters of water. Do not do this hike if you don't have food. Do not do this hike if you start after 8 AM. Do not do this hike if you don't have 10-12 hours to commit to it. Do not do this hike if you've never scrambled before. Do not do this hike if you are afraid of hights. With all that being said, the views were stunning and it was a fantastic challenge. Wish we could have hit the real summit but we felt unsafe in the blue rope section. Recommend it for someone who is confident in their abilities, want a challenge, and needs to be humbled. Wear long pants, long sleeve, good hiking boots, hat and gloves. Bring food and lots of water. I recommend hiking with www.ocotillohikers.org.

In the 1920s, several students made it a joke to leave “A”s on different buildings and structures throughout campus. In the early hours of March 31, 1920, these Aggie students decided to take it to the next level. After reaching the top of Tortugas Mountain, just outside of campus, the students arranged a large “A” about 300 feet tall or roughly the size of a football field. The next day, April 1, students gathered at the base of the the newly formed “A” Mountain and began creating a line of students from the bottom to the top of the mountain, passing along old milk cans full of whitewash to paint the "A." The tradition soon developed to repaint the “A” each year on April, known as "A" Day. It is one of the oldest traditions at NMSU, and many of our alumni cherish this memory. Today, the “A” is painted during Greek Week as the Greek Community’s Day of Service. The “A” is frequently lit up for various events and activities, including Aggie Welcome Week, Tough Enough to Wear Pink Week (our local breast cancer awareness campaign) and home sports games. This is one of the University's biggest landmarks that proudly displays to anyone who visits or returns to Las Cruces that this is home to the NMSU Aggies.
