Just east of Fårösund, formerly a limestone mine and then a restricted military area, Bungenäs has now been transformed into an holiday destination with cottages nestling amongst the open face mines as well as restaurant and cafe in the original factory buildings. Fantastic coastal scenery with the entire area only accessible by bike (or by foot).

Further south of Visby, beyond Kneippbyn is Högklint, offering views out to sea and back to Visby. A 10 minute drive from town or a longer days walk along the coast (see above guide)

Beaches
Great beach on the south east coast away from the crowds with shallow calm water perfect for the kids. The best spots are away from the nearby campsite so follow the signs to the Sysnefiskbutik (fishmonger), drive past the campsite and along the road for about 1km and when you turn right towards the store, there is a small parking area and a short walk to the beach! Spend the day here and then head to Sysne for some tasty smoked fish!

They have a great beach bar with food and drinks as well as loads of water sport equipment available to rent such as paddle boards and also a skateboard ramp and balancing rope. Great environment!

If you are heading to Fårö then make an early start to avoid queues at the ferry and get a good spot at Sudersand beach. There’s plenty to do at the resort including play areas for the kids and restaurants and cafés.

Family Attractions
The classic attractions just south of Visby. Kneippbyn great especially for younger kids and fans of Pippi but a great variety of rides and activities. Sommarland is a great waterpark with a broader variety of rides also suiting older kids. They have expanded Sommarland recently so there is more space for bathing and relaxing by the pools. Can get busy so best to get there early on in the day and time the different Kneippbyn shows.

Sommarland is a great waterpark with a broader variety of rides also suiting older kids. They have expanded Sommarland recently so there is more space for bathing and relaxing by the pools. Take a tour in these classically renovated steam trains between Dalhem and Roma. Explore the original station houses, rolling stock and engines and learn about the historical railway that once stretched across most of the island. Check the timetables and start from Dalhem - there is also a café by the station house.

Plenty to see walking around the medieval walls - Highlights are walking along the top of the wall at the Palisades at the very southern tip of the wall overlooking the harbour. Make your way through the botanical gardens before heading up the northern side of the wall and around the top with fantastic views over the city from behind the cathedral (domkyrkan).
North of the city - easily reached from the northern gate is a very pleasant forest walk along the bottom of the cliffs. Depending on your endurance you can walk all the way to Snäck and back along the ocean or climb up to the top of the cliffs and back through Galgberget. Great cycling also!
