The earthworks were first constructed almost 3,000 years ago. It was occupied for 500 years and, in its heyday had a population of 300-400. Danebury Hill, on which the hill fort sits, dominates the local landscape and has commanding views of the area. There is ample parking.

Bentley Wood (grid reference SU250295), together with the adjacent Blackmoor Copse, form one of the largest contiguous areas of woodland in Wiltshire. The wood is immediately north of the village of West Dean, and is largely within West Dean parish. 665 hectares of the wood is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest and is important for butterflies, including purple emperor, white admiral and pearl-bordered fritillary. The Forestry Commission (FC) acquired Bentley Wood in 1950 and undertook a large replanting programme to fill the spaces cleared to accommodate military facilities in WW II . In 1983 the Government decided to sell much woodland owned by the FC, including Bentley Wood. A local resident, Lady Ann Colman, formed a trust to purchase Bentley Wood for the public, which was achieved in 1984.
