Arepas — a Venezuelan take-away sandwich stuffed with plantains/meat/veggies/cheese between corn bread — is an ideal vegan- or vegetarian-friendly meal along Prince Arthur. Best enjoyed with a craft beer from Dispensaire across the street.

Montreal's most famous restaurant is just a few blocks up Saint-Laurent. If the line is too long, there's a case to be made that The Main across the street is better (but we'd still say Schwartz's if you can). Pro tip if sharing: Get the smoke meat by the pound, with some rye bread, fries and a pickle and make your own to save $$.

Chef Christian Manuel Ventura Alatorre's revolutionary vegan restaurant, Momo, has inventive sushi that'll leave you questioning if you really need the fish — seriously. Nearby, Ventura Alatorre recently opened Mexican-Japanese fusion restaurant Casa Kaizen and Nopalito, which specializes in tasty take-away Mexican tortas.

If you don't want to leave Montreal without trying poutine — this is where to go. Open 24 hours, with lineups throughout the night, La Banquise has the most creative poutine options (though not necessarily the best poutine). For the city's best, find Chez Claudette north on Laurier.

One of Montreal's best bakeries is dangerously close by (just past Square Saint Louis on Saint-Denis). Do yourself a favour and try one of their croissants (or baguettes, or loaves etc).

Martin Picard is Montreal's most famous chef, having hosted Anthony Bourdain on several occasions. The food here is straight gluttony — hearty Quebec fare that'll leave you stuffed and foie gras everything. One of those bucket list kinds of places.

Delicious local microbrewery around the corner with 1L take-away bottles or cans. Every beer we've had from here is extremely tasty. Yes, you can crack it open on Prince Arthur, but technically you should be at a picnic table with some food (Arepera or Cafe Mezcal across the street would be our picks).

Montreal's prettiest park is just steps away (right on Prince Arthur). The kiosk in the middle serves coffee and ice cream in the summer, and keep an ear out for live music. Which colourful house is your favourite?

This huge city park is where to get an authentic taste of Montreal/Plateau life. There's a pretty lake and fountain for lounging beside or skating in winter, and perpetually hundreds of eclectic people playing park games, stringing hippie guitars, or having a picnic with friends.

Montreal is named after this mountain, which is only a short walk from the apartment. Stretch your legs with a zig-zagging walk to the top and gander at the best view of the city (the staircase mid-way is a shortcut if you're short on time/energy). On top, there's Beaver Lake, which is a fine picnic spot and place where you can rent cross-country skis in winter. Down below in the park along Parc Ave. is Tam Tams, which on Sundays becomes Montreal's best throwback to the 60s, with improv musicians banging away on drums and thousands of others having picnics. Smell something in the air? Cannabis is legal and can be purchased at SQDC stores. You are also permitted to drink alcohol in city parks, but you technically need to have a meal with it (a bag of chips isn't enough, but baguette with cheese and saucisse is).
