Food scene

There’s a reason this is the restaurant all the celebrities, dignitaries, etc. eat at when they’re in town. Not to see or be seen, but because it has the best food and atmosphere. If I eat out, it’s here. My go-to cocktail is the Black Dagger, app is the Spicy Cauliflower and entrée is the Wedge Steak Salad (although the burger is incredible and I know a lot of people sing the praises of the pork shank). I don’t do dessert, but it always looks yummy!

The Fieldhouse might have the most progressive food in town; it reminds me of a hip spot you’d find in Brooklyn. It also has outdoor dining in the fenced-in backyard (dog-friendly) and is attached to The Annex, a fancy schmancy coffee place owned by the same people I think.

Coffee

Black Dog Coffee is my go-to because it’s dog-friendly (even inside!) and it has outdoor seating. The whole shop is dog-themed, and it’s always clean (unlike Starbucks or Citybrew) and has a great energy. The coffee they serve is from Stumptown, a local brewer.

Lunch

I love the poke bowls at O’hana Poke Bowl (has some outdoor seating). They’re pricey ($10-$16) but it’s hard to find fresh raw fish in Montana, and this family-owned place has the best in town.

Lunch

MBC (outdoor seating and is downtown) is perhaps the most popular spot with its pub fare menu and beers brewed on site. I like it because it always has a lively atmosphere and great people watching.

Parks

Norm’s Island in the Yellowstone is where I walk my dog every day. If you go out the front door, turn left and then left again on the street, you can walk about 4 blocks down to where you’ll see The Songbird Community Garden. The walking trail to Norm’s Island is right there and the island is only .5 miles away. Once you’re on the island, dogs can be off leash! The loop around the island is 1.8-miles long. It usually takes 50 minutes to walk (door to door).

Pioneer Park is another great park downtown. I think it’s the largest park in town. There’s a disc golf course, tennis courts and plenty of rolling hills and lawns for playing with your pup.

My favorite shop

With a couple of bowling lanes, tons of taxidermy, a Ferris wheel and the largest aquariums in town (I think), Scheels is a destination in itself. It’s a sporting goods store sort of like REI but it’s like 10 times the size and also has home goods, a ton of hunting gear, a fudge shop, café, more casual apparel, and basically the biggest/best selection in town. If you can’t find it at Scheels, you probably can’t find it anywhere. I also love that it’s dog-friendly!

City/town information

Every chance I get I drive to Red Lodge, about an hour away. It’s at the foothill of the Beartooth Mountains and is the gateway to the Beartooth Pass (one of the most epic roads in the country). The town itself has no stoplights, but there are plenty of cute shops and restaurants – it’s sort of a ski resort town. A number of great hiking trails are all within a 20-minute drive of town.
