Take the ferry across the river (this is supposedly the deepest spot in the Mississippi) to Algiers- there is a great walking path along the river and this is bar-none the best view of New Orleans- breathtaking.

This is one of my favorite eateries. It's located in a groovy little nook of the city that has bloomed since hurricane Katrina. They serve a dog for every taste bud: alligator, local sausage, vegetarian even. My fav is the duck dog with blueberry sauce. They also have two other locations (Freret is the original). I would recommend the Frenchman Street location- go to the upper story and eat on the balcony.

A fresh take on Italian-influenced dining. The chef is a creative, passionate restauranteur who "goes local' to create masterful meals (the peppers in the piquant fish special come from our garden).

Unique place that sits out in the middle of the swamp between Lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas. You can eat on the deck, weather permitting. I recommend you drive old 51 on the way out so you are right at swamp level, and highway 55 back so you are on the elevated road- both give great views of the natural beauty of the area. They serve lunch/dinner but not breakfast.

This is one of the river plantations but the story here is told through the eyes of the enslaved population rather than from those of the landowner. It can be a powerful experience and is beautifully done, incorporating lovely art and actual narratives of the people. There is nothing else like it in the U.S.

Lovely trail that is partly on a raised boardwalk through the swamps of Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge. There is one overlook I particularly like where you are out in the center of a sea of tall reeds with only the sound of the blackbirds to "disturb" you.
