This quint little mountain town is just a short 40 minutes north of Asheville. It is a haven for those seeking outdoor adventure, healing and relaxation. It is a the junction of the Appalachian Trail which goes directly through town and the north flowing French Broad River. It is surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest with hundred of hiking trails!

It is a the junction of the Appalachian Trail which goes directly through town and the north flowing French Broad River. It is surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest with hundred of hiking trails!
This historic "one street wide and a mile long" town is nestled between rocky cliffs and the French Broad River. This town is home to our 100 year old courthouse, artist studios, eclectic shops and local eateries and drinks.

A must-hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway (milepost 420.2) is the Black Balsam Knob area, which includes some of the most spectacular mountain balds in the Southern Appalachians, including Black Balsam Knob, Sam Knob and Tennent Mountain. These treeless mountaintops in the Pisgah National Forest draw people from all over to soak in the sweeping views with an alpine-like feel. Almost entirely devoid of trees above 6,000 ft. elevation, the summits are more reminiscent of New England than North Carolina.

On a clear day, you can even see the skyline of Charlotte - about 90 miles away! The strenuous hike climbs about 700 ft. in elevation, so allow plenty of time. It's definitely one of our favorite hikes near Asheville!
