City/town information

In my view it is the best place on the East Coast of the USA. Bar Harbor has a “proper grocery store” on Cottage Street there is also one in on the right side of Rt 198 as you come into the town of Southwest Harbor. Ellsworth has two larger groceries. I usually stop at one of them on my way into the cabin to pick up supplies. For Organic products the Alternative A Community Market at 16 Mount Desert St. in Bar Harbor is a good choice. The cheapest gasoline is usually at Carroll’s in Trenton. There is an excellent bookstore in Bar Harbor called Sherman’s on Main Street. I like to eat lobster at Beal’s Lobster Pound on Clarks Pt. Rd in Southwest Harbor. My favorite restaurant for a casual meal is The Side Street Café which is located on Rodick St. They serve the best lobster roll I have ever eaten. Everything on their menu is good and not very expensive you can also do take-out. The West Street Cafe in Bar Harbor has excellent Lobster Rolls and fish and chips. Do have high tea at Jordan Pond House. They serve giant popovers with the world’s best strawberry preserves.. The Jordan Pond House is currently open for counter service. They have a limited menu that includes popovers, stews/chowders and sandwiches. Reservations are not accepted at this time. They have plenty of seating available. The current hours are 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM daily. The Nature Conservancy has a spot on Indian Point Rd. where you can sometimes see seals sunbathing and eagles overhead. There is a short hike from the parking lot to get to the shore. If you are interested in viewing gardens, the Rockefeller Gardens are open twice a week from the end of July under just after Labor Day. If you want to visit, you will need to call for a reservation well in advance. The office is open on Tuesday and Wednesday from 12-3:30 pm. Telephone # 207-276-3727. https://www.gardenpreserve.org/ There are many wonderful places to hike of all levels of difficulty. There are some trail guides in the cabin. Mail boats carry passengers to the Cranberry Islands. It can be a fun way to spend a day. Bring warm clothes… the temperature can drop sharply when you are on the water. Sometimes there is a substantial amount of traffic on Route 3 going from MDI to Ellsworth. To bypass Route 3 in Ellsworth turn off of Route 3 at Oak Point Rd. (Lunts Lobster Pound is the landmark) then turn right onto Goose Cove Rd. And then make another right turn onto Route 230. This will bypass all of the stores and traffic on Route 3. Route 230 will merge onto Route 3.
