The views from the Rock are stunning. The drive from Treetops is approximately 15 minutes as the roads are narrow but so worthwhile.. There is a second easier but longer route as an option. There is a large car park, with toilets and a cafe, and the view from the other side of the Rock excels this one, over the River Wye towards Goodrich and the Forest of Dean, with the chance of watching the nesting peregrine falcons. Many walks through the woodland are accessed from the car park.

A magnificent ruined castle with fascinating history. This monument is protected and managed by Cadw, the equivalent of English Heritage, so there is a reciprocal admission payment arrangement. Its in a stunning setting near the village of Raglan. In midsummer we have watched the Lord Chamberlains Men present open air Shakespeare plays here - not to be missed! No need to prebook but check their website for dates. Take a garden chair (I can supply) picnic and make the most of your visit.

In a spectacular setting by the River Wye, this 12th Century abbey was the first Cistercian foundation in Wales. It has been painted by Turner, and provided inspiration to Wordsworth. A circular walk takes you up to the Devil's Pulpit for a stunning aerial view of the abbey nestling in the valley. On your route you will pass the old railway station, which now houses a cafe and information centre, as well as a host of memorabilia. There's a pleasant short walk parallel to the river along the old railway track back towards Brockweir if you would like an easy stretch of the legs after your snack. On the Tintern side of the station an open area houses life size carvings of 6 important local characters - including King Offa and Geoffrey of Monmouth. Here there is also a barbecue area.

Special towns in the area

A lovely market town with the only remaining fortified river bridge in Great Britain. Here you'll find a whole range of small independent shops, as well as Waitrose and M and S Food. It has the oldest known theatre site in Wales, which normally shows current cinema listings interspersed with theatre or live gigs. Very small, friendly and cheap! Check the pictures on their website. Henry Rolls and Henry V were both born here. It was a centre for the Chartist uprising of 1839 campaigning for parliamentary electoral reform.

Superb walks

Iconic hill, at 886m it is the highest point in the Brecon Beacons. Great views. Begin this 4 mile circular walk from the Pont ar Daf on the A470, where there are toilets and refreshments. Go well prepared - the weather can change quickly. Strong walking boots are essential. As the start is already at 430m it is not super strenuous and there is a well made path to the summit. Very popular so avoid busy days (weekends and Bank Holidays). Obviously only go when there's an excellent weather forecast.

Outdoor activities

Beechenhurst is the ideal place to begin exploring the Forest of Dean. It has facilities for refreshments and toilets, as well as tourist information. There is a cycle trail which begins here as well as the Sculpture Trail through the forest, which includes a huge stained glass window as well as numerous and varied sculptures often made of natural substances. Half a mile up the hill on the B4226 you will find Speech House, built in 1669 but now an hotel which welcomes you to stay for afternoon tea in the Verderer's Court (for the protection of vert and venison) - for 300 years .the former courtroom used for trials when the forest was essentially a self governing entity. It was built as a hunting lodge for King Charles the 2nd.

City/town information

This is a delightful little town, littered with specialist old book shops, super cafes - and sometimes both under one roof! Booth's is a particular favourite, being both huge and welcoming at the same time. Big armchairs on the first floor allow you to lose some time browsing through your selection, and there's an excellent cafe on the ground floor at the back, with an outside terrace in good weather. Sheperd's ice cream parlour is another favourite cafe, with lots of cakes and snacks as well as a superb range of local ice creams. The town itself hosts a world famous Literary Festival each May, with talks from national and international household names, as well as a host of activities. Pre booking is essential. There are some lovely walks around this quaint old town taking in stretches of the River Wye.

여행 팁

놓치면 후회하는 장소/활동

The Mappa Mundi and the Chained Library, Hereford

The Mappa Mundi and the Library are both medieval (< 1400AD). The easiest car park is St Martins, by the swimming pool, before you cross the River Wye at Hereford. From here walk over the old bridge and turn right behind the Left Bank hotel, accessing the Cathedral area via Nell Gwynne's Lane. Alternatively from the same car park you could access the old castle area (no remains excepting a small stretch of moat), approached by following the river through Bishop's Meadow and crossing the Victoria bridge. Bear left once crossed and this will lead you through parkland to the Cathedral.
