Banh Mi. This sliver of a store in West Seattle justifiably draws crowds for its four banh mi offerings. It is especially known for its mayonnaise and liver pate, both made fresh daily. That pate is spread lightly on the grilled pork and grilled chicken sandwiches, with a more generous layer on the “classic,” which includes sliced jambon, sliced pork roll, and dried shredded pork. Oh’s also has a wide variety of milk tea, iced tea, smoothies, and other beverages.

The Northwest Wine Academy was established in 2004 as the first and only working and teaching winery of its kind in Western Washington. Classes are designed for students just starting out in the wine industry, professionals who need to enhance their skills and knowledge of current trends, and enthusiasts who want to deepen their knowledge of wine. Wine Production students pick and crush grapes and see the wines through to final production. Sales and Marketing students prepare materials to sell the wines and also manage our tasting room’s wine events. Food and Wine Pairing students utilize their training by selecting foods to prepare and by managing on-campus events. Along the way, there are numerous opportunities to volunteer with wineries and at events, helping to develop contacts within the industry and to further develop relevant skills. Classes may be taken individually, or as part of a certificate or degree program. Certificates and Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees are offered in Wine Production and Marketing & Sales of Food & Wine. Since releasing its first vintages in 2005, the Northwest Wine Academy has consistently created award winning, student-produced wines that have received medals at numerous prestigious competitions. We produce nearly 1,000 cases of wine each year.

In the late 1990s, a young couple new to Seattle discovered a shared love of Washington State wines. After exploring the diversity of Pacific Northwest viniculture, and attending the UC Davis Viticulture and Enology program, Ben tried his own hand at making wine. From that moment on, there was no looking back: his craft has grown from a small but passionate basement project to a flourishing boutique urban winery. Today, Viscon Cellars is an award-winning family-owned West Seattle winery focused on small lot production, sourcing fruit from premiere Washington grape growers.

Hiking

A great resource for researching hikes is Washington Trails Association (wta.org). Our absolute favorite place to hike and camp is the Olympic Peninsula. It’s a bit more of a trek to get to but well worth it. The closest destination is Lake Quinault/Quinault rainforest which is a magical place. North Cascades National Park is also another favorite of ours, (it's the least visited National park in the US, it's got more glaciers than Glacier National Park and it's free to enter) but it's about 120 miles north of us; Hidden Lake Trail is in that area and it's pretty awesome. There are lots of other hikes in and around that park that you could find on wta's website. Mt. Rainier is quite a bit closer but more crowded. One of our favorite hikes is Summit Lake (about 70 miles SE of us). You can also go due east, about 65 miles, and hike Snow Lake trail which is a great hike. If you want to stay closer to us, you can go to either Cougar Mountain or Tiger Mountain, both are due east about 30-35 miles. They will be pretty crowded because they're close to the city but they're nice hikes. Finally, as you likely saw on on our posting, we live .2 miles from Schmitz Preserve Park which is an old-growth forest; it's pretty small (50 acres) but it's really great for a daily walk.
Home of Bruun Idun, West Seattle's Troll. Lincoln Park is West Seattle's major multi-purpose park - a nose-shaped bluff on Puget Sound just north of the Fauntleroy Ferry Terminal. Switchbacks on the north and gentle trails to the south connect a mile of seawalls, rocky beaches to a bluff of grassy forests and meadows with play and picnic areas galore. Amazingly diverse for its size, Lincoln includes 4.6 miles of walking paths, 3.9 miles of bike trails, five picnic shelters, acres of playfields, and an outdoor heated saltwater pool and bathhouse.

Wrapping around West Seattle's Duwamish Head, the Alki Multi-Use Trail boasts some of the best views in the Emerald City. On the east side from Seacrest Park, views expand east across Elliott Bay toward the Seattle skyline and the Cascade Range and north toward Queen Anne and Magnolia. On the western stretch, views extend across the Puget Sound to the always stunning Olympic Mountains. Along the entire 1.9-mile stretch from Seacrest Park to Alki Beach, this broad, multi-purpose paved pathway provides opportunities to stop, rest on one of many park benches, and soak up the best of what Seattle has to offer. In total, the Alki Multi-Use Trail is 4 miles long, starting in the southeast under the West Seattle Bridge adjacent to the Nucor Steel plant, turning around Duwamish Point, and making its way southwest to Alki Point. The Alki Point Lighthouse stands at the end of the trail, a 37-foot tall mariners navigation beacon built in 1913 that is still in use today. Because it is still operated and managed by the U.S. Coast Guard, the lighthouse is only open to the public on weekends from 1p.m. to 4 p.m. during the summer months.

The Arboretum’s Waterfront Trail leads you to Marsh and Foster Islands. Pick up a trail guide, keyed to numbered posts along the trail, at the Graham Visitors Center. If you visit in the spring, look for the blue, scented flowers of China’s empress tree (Paulownia tomentosa) adjacent to Duck Bay. In summer, a breeze may cause “snow” to fall from the cottonwoods (Populus). In the fall, look for golden-hued needles of the larch (Larix). Many kinds of trees-native and exotic-mingle here: willows (Salix species) on the water’s edge, an alder grove (Alnus species), the sleek madrona (Arbutus menziesii), pines (Pinus species), Douglas-firs (Pseudotsuga menziesii), maples (Acer) and oaks (Quercus). Smaller woody plants such as our native salal (Gaultheria shallon) and serviceberry (Amelanchier) grow in the understory. Foster Island contains some of the oldest plantings in the Arboretum, with many specimens dating from the 1930s and 1940s.
