Historical and Educational Southeast Ohio History Center
Athens County and surrounding area was first in so many ways. Mound building native first people, founding of first institution of higher learning in the Northwest Territory, Ohio University, as well as numerous sites where military actions occurred and early settlements began. A visit to the Southeast Ohio History Center in Athens is a must!
Start any exploration with the SEOHC. Walk there and look around at their historical building and get so... much information. Not to be missed and known for genealogy visitors too.

As the crown of the beautiful old state mental hospital, The Ridges is now part of Ohio University with its own unique history. The Kennedy Museum, and a lovely art exhibition space-Lin Hall, is in the central administration building which is worthwhile just for the architecture. The museum has an amazing chief’s robes and silver-turquoise jewelry collection.

The Kennedy Museum, and a lovely art exhibition space-Lin Hall, is in the central administration building which is worthwhile just for the architecture. The museum has an amazing chief’s robes and silver-turquoise jewelry collection.
Amazing venue to music, weddings and local theatre productions on the stage of a restored Opera House. Now has a huge Learning Center attached with educational programs and hosting in an amazing renovation of the anchor of the historic Nelsonville Public Square. Worth wandering the small local shops and maybe a ride on the restored old trains of the Hocking Valley Railroad too!

Beautiful use of a very significant early structure in Athens early days. Great people and so much information of great things to do and see..if you enjoy motorcycle riding, be sure to ask for the Windy 9 map!

Biking and hiking
Athens has many bike lanes, the bike path connects parts of town and even city steps make this a biking and hiking community. Great access to many hiking opportunities in nature nearby too.
The new developing Bailey’s Trail System in the Wayne National Forest is fast becoming a destination for mountain bikers as well as hikers in the beautiful “Wayne”.

Wow, what a great rail to trail bikeway that is about 20 miles long and connects Athens to Nelsonville. Beautiful ride or walk with parts along the Hocking River and spring wildflowers and cool shade trees on a large part of it. Eclipse Company Store is a perfect place for a rest, bite of food and a brew.

Canoeing and fishing
Athens is close to lots of options for canoeing, kayaking and fishing with state parks and even the Ohio River. Depending on the season, the Hocking can be fun to canoe on parts above and below the city but caution to avoid the old White’s Mill dam.
Just outside Athens, this little Ohio State Park has a campground, sand beach, boat rentals and great place for picnics and a favorite for early morning canoeing to see lots of birds and wildlife. Many nice hiking trails with one connecting to Sells Park in an Athens neighborhood.

Many nice hiking trails with one connecting to Sells Park in an Athens neighborhood.

Camping, boating and nice lodge with big pool makes this a great meeting spot. The trails have been improved by the “Friends” too. There is a nice walk down to the lake from The Lodge where they have an interesting gift shop and beautiful big fireplaces!

Burr Oak State Park Campground
Burr Oak RoadCamping, boating and nice lodge with big pool makes this a great meeting spot. The trails have been improved by the “Friends” too. There is a nice walk down to the lake from The Lodge where they have an interesting gift shop and beautiful big fireplaces!
