Mixed conifers characterize this 3.3 mile trail located on the south facing slope of the Rio Hondo Canyon, mostly along the west Gavilan Creek, but as the name Gavilan “Hawk” implies, it ascends quickly, gaining 2,000 feet in elevation. The first section of this trail is difficult, but becomes relatively easier as the trail opens up into meadows towards the ridge. About 1.25 million years ago, a volcanic eruption created the 13-mile wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and embraces a rich ranching history. The cabin scenes on the show Longmire were filmed here.

The Orilla Verde Recreation Area is located within the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument and along the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River. Gentle waters with occasional small rapids flow through Orilla Verde, providing an ideal setting for many recreational activities. Because of the dramatic changes in elevation and the diversity of plant life, Orilla Verde draws many species of animals, including raptors (such as eagles and hawks), songbirds, waterfowl, beaver, cougar, ringtail, mule deer, and more. The Rio Grande also has attracted humans since prehistoric times. Evidence of ancient peoples is found throughout the Recreation Area in the form of petroglyphs on the rocks and many other types of archaeological sites.

Drives

This route is a breathtaking way to travel between Taos and Santa fe, winding through remote mountain villages with strong Spanish Colonial roots. The path will also take you to Chimayó, home of the famous El Santuario de Chimayó, a Roman Catholic church known for its mystical powers inspiring the yearly pilgrimage of thousands. Travel time without stops is 2-1/2 hours, but take it slow for the real experience. From the Taos Plaza, head south to Ranchos and take HWY 518 east; then HWY 75 west to Peñasco; HWY 76 south to Trampas, Truchas, Cordova and Chimayó; HWY 68 south takes you on to Santa Fe.

This is the most amazing scenic drive heading west out of Taos. Take 64 west over the Rio Grande gorge bridge and just keep going. You’ll go through Tres Piedras and into the national forest, then on to Hopewell Lake. For the most dramatic scenery, though, continue all the way to Tierra Amarilla for views overlooking the Brazos cliffs and the entire western part of the state. Watch for ranchers herding livestock over the road at certain times of the year. Fall colors will blow your mind. The pass is often closed in winter.
