No visit to the area would be complete without a visit to Wasdale, the wildest of the valleys in the Lake District and has some of the most stunning and dramatic scenery in the region. The valley is a walkers paradise with some of the biggest and most spectacular mountains in the Lake District such as Scafell Pike, Great Gable, Pillar and Kirk Fell. Or for a more gentle stroll there are many low level lakeside and woodland walks to explore. Equally as impressive on a dull or stormy day as on a hot summers day the views change with the seasons and the weather. Wasdale is approximately 11 miles from Muncaster. For Sat Nav follow CA20 1EX - this will take you right to the far end of the valley.

A lovely valley stretching into the heart of the central Lake District, with rolling green fields grazed by flocks of native Herdwick sheep. The River Esk runs through the valley and many tarns can be found perched above the valley sides. There are many lovely walks around Eskdale, the walk to Stanley Ghyll Force is a favourite of many. The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway know locally as La’al Ratty provides transport between the valley and Ravenglass.

The remains of the bath house of Ravenglass Roman fort are among the tallest Roman structures surviving in northern Britain - the walls stand almost four metres high. The fort at Ravenglass guarded what was probably a useful harbour, and there is evidence that soldiers stationed here served in Hadrian's fleet.
