This is a super fun family-friendly venue. Stick to weekdays (weekends are uncomfortably packed), and also come in the late afternoon to avoid bigger crowds. YMCA camps and lots of younger families come in the morning and leave around 2 p.m., but the slides are open until 7. I recommend arriving around 2 and staying until shut down! If you DO arrive when they open at 10, expect to wait in line a minimum of 20 minutes to get in, and sometimes up to 45 minutes.

If you like to be a little scared, and want to see views of Lake Chelan and the Columbia that few can, then this is the place for you. The disclaimers are VERY thorough. Remember, sky diving is NOT safe, and you can definitely die. If you don't mind that, then dive in! I've gone here myself and they are a top notch outfit with friendly owners and staff.

Chelan's very own tiny ski area. Sledding too! Check conditions before you head up.

A 40-minute drive from the guesthouse, this family-friendly ski area is a non-profit that was saved from bankruptcy by a very motivated group of locals, led by my dad, Richard Thomason. I grew up skiing this hill, and have every inch of it memorized. The lodge is very basic and rustic, but I've been coming here with my kids for many years. Bring a sled for the babies to tow around and watch your older kids ski the poma or the big hill! Incredible views of the Methow valley, and lots of locals to talk to. Be sure to stop at Loup Loup Ski Shop downtown Twisp for your rentals before you head up the hill. Owner Ron Mackie is a Loup Loup veteran and he will treat you right! Tell him Amber sent you. :)

Great views and a legendary course. People travel to Brewster just to play here. Danny Boy Grill is hit or miss, to be honest. Sometimes it's great, sometimes...not so much. But even if you sit down just for a drink and the views, it's worth it. The staff are very friendly, even if it can be a bit disorganized at times. Sometimes there is live music in the summer, so that's something to check! The course itself is pretty pricey. If you're not prepared to spend that kind of money, check out Alta Lake Golf Course or Bear Mountain in Chelan.

Nice course, friendly owners and much cheaper than Gamble Sands. Take a dip in the lake when you're done...but fair warning from a local who has lived in the area for many years, steer clear of Alta Lake during August. It is almost always too hot in certain areas and known for giving people swimmer's itch. Spring, early summer or fall are the best time to swim here.

My favorite park in the Chelan area, hands down. Breathtaking views of the lake, sandy beach, picnic area. I believe this park is only accessible via stairs and it's on a hill, so it's not great if you have mobility issues. A tiny parking lot limits crowd size. On a weekend, you probably won't get a spot. If you don't get a spot, then head to the Manson Marina instead.

Head here for a fun day trip. It's about an hour from the guesthouse. Go for a hike, then explore the town, grab a bite to eat and get some ice cream and taffy on the board walk!

If you're staying at our guesthouse, your true destination might be Chelan. It's true, Chelan is the jewel of central Washington. If you are looking for a less crowded park, I recommend Lakeside Park. However, like any of the parks near water, there can be annoying bugs, so pack a little bug spray and you'll thank me. Don Morse park is better if you're looking for a younger crowd (college age and 20's tend to congregate here) and there is a play area for kids. Weekends are packed in all parks no matter where you are. Drive out of town to the state park for fewer crowds and pack your own picnic. Willow Point Park in Manson is my absolute favorite park in the Chelan area. It has a tiny parking lot that limits the crowd size. If you can snag a spot, it has sandy beaches, picnic areas, a small play area and breathtaking views of a fairly uncrowded part of the lake. The swimming is fantastic!

Food scene

Legendary fries. Locally owned for decades, almost pushed out by a McDonald's but the locals wouldn't have it. Eat outside and enjoy views of the lake.

I wish I could say this is a local secret, but the word is definitely out. I DO NOT recommend attempting blueberry hills on a weekend. Frankly, it's just packed with tourists and you might wait an hour to get in. Try a weekday and enjoy much more reasonable wait times (sometimes no crowds at all!). Fantastic pies, blueberry shakes (even if you don't like blueberries, this is the real deal), waffles, eggs benedict to die for. Weekends in the fall, winter and spring are usually ok for crowds, but you can call ahead and check to be sure, and be sure to check their hours online before making the drive.

The best part about this bakery is that it's a two-minute walk from the guesthouse. The pastries are great and the coffee is fresh. In the summer, there is usually live music every weekend outside, with fun river views. The food is hit or miss. If they are crowded they can get overwhelmed with orders and sometimes get things wrong. Speak clearly and slowly when you order and make them repeat the order back to you, especially if you are ordering for a big group or family. If you have special dietary needs or restrictions, I really don't recommend them. They just aren't accurate enough to be trusted to get it right. However, if you want something simple that is already on the menu without customizations, they usually get it right, and it's usually pretty good (soup, salads, etc.). It's run by local folks doing the best they can, so even if they get your order wrong, please give them a break and politely request a correction.

Honestly, this place has some of the best Mexican food around. It's about a five minute drive from the guesthouse and you can get your food to go and eat it at a park or back at the guesthouse. Great salsa bar, and super authentic street tacos. The owners are so friendly and they want your business. For big families or groups, ask for the family deal (includes 2 liter soda, either 12 or 20 tacos de asada, pork or chicken, rice and beans). You can't beat the price!
