The Information Centre itself is in a beautiful spot of the town, with river views and a White Island model displace inside. Near by is local shops along 'The Strand' and great cafe's and restaurants.
Sightseeing
A historic pa sight that is of cultural importance to Maori. It has a fantastic view of the coastline towards Mount Maunganui and a view over the Whakatane township. This area is considered Wahi Tapu - a sacred area that is to be respected.
There are also walking tracks here down to Otarawairere Bay. The lovely folk at the Whakatane Information Centre will be able to provide you with more information.
Perfect for a couple of hours or a day trip! The track starts at West End Surf Beach and takes 20 minutes or so to reach. Take a book, bottle of water and picnic lunch and sit under the mighty Pohutukawa trees that line the bay.
Swim, search the rock pools or simply relax. Only reached by walking tracks or watercraft. A local favourite, including exercise track.

The beach it'self is ideal for swimming. You can walk across the road and swim from the bach! There is also a surf patrolled area of the beach in front of the Surf Life Saving Club. West end is known for it's surf.
