Just up and over Mt. Bachelor lies the majestic Cascade Lakes Highway, dedicated as a National Scenic Byway in 1989. There is no doubt about it, one trip on this remarkable byway and you'll understand why Scenic America named Cascade Lakes as one of the most important byways. Its showcases 150 spectacular sparkling alpine lakes, lush meadows, vast wildlife and lava formations of outstanding beauty. As you pass through this landscape of incredible diversity you will encounter sweeping turns where glaciers and volcanos created an area of unsurpassed beauty and geologic significance. You can stay and play or if you just want to go on a long scenic drive then Cascade Lakes is your kind of place, where the towering Cascade snow capped mountains provide a constant backdrop in this recreational paradise. This byway is named Century Drive because it is nearly 100 miles from Bend to Elk Lake and back. The scenic highway from Mt Bachelor is a 66 mile two-lane highway. In the 1950's this once historic red road was paved with red volcanic cinders, which became a landmark. It was covered with black asphalt in the 1980's. In the mid 1960's astronauts trained along the highway in preparation for the Apollo to the moon. In 1971, Astronaut Jim Irwin of the Apollo 15 mission placed an earth rock from the volcanic dome near Devils Lake on the lunar surface. It's the only earth rock on the moon. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. There are great places to kayak and paddle board. Best time to travel: June - October This road closes just south of Mt. Bachelor in the winter months: Approximate driving time 3-5 hours of

This Butte is a major focal point located in the center of Bend. It's approximately one mile up. You are able to drive or bike it or utilize the footpath to walk up the dirt path. The view will reward your efforts, offering visitors a sweeping 360 panorama of the Cascade Mountain Range, Calderas, Smith Rock and the City of Bend.
