The most scenic village in the beautiful Župa park is Mlini that has its own sea and the small river of Zavrelje, shallow pebble beaches and protected bays, flower filled gardens and paths, hotels, rivers and summer residences. Mlini used to be the ancient historical settlement Molina. This was the centre of the milling trade, and a long time ago it was often mentioned because before the water system was built water was taken from here to Dubrovnik, especially in the summer months when there was a drought. In the 15th century, two boats regularly carried drinking water from Mlini to Dubrovnik. The village got its name thanks to the abundant springs on which the mills were built.

The special charm of this old city are the buildings that have remained from the time of the old Dubrovnik Republic. This city was also built according to the regulation plans prescribed by the Republic, and the result was the present-day look of the old part of Cavtat. A larger part of the monuments of history and culture belong to the fine but modest Renaissance architecture with some traces of the Gothic style: the Rector's palace, fortifications, city walls round the city, squares, St. Nicholas' church, the church dedicated to Our Lady of Cavtat and the Franciscan monastery.

Unsurprisingly, the highest view of Dubrovnik is also one of the most rewarding. As you soar up Mount Srd on the cable car, the ascending view is spectacular; the shifting panorama of the Old Town and Lokrum Island is gradually swallowed up by the brilliant blue sea. At the peak of the summit, the aptly named restaurant Panorama provides just that – with excellent views stretching over the harbour.

If Dubrovnik’s City Walls are a display of the power of a one-time medieval city-state, then the Rector’s Palace is a look into the everyday details. The Rector presided over a superbly functioning self-government, his palace by the main square containing the sedan chairs, wigs and robes that helped him carry out his duties. Portraits of previous counterparts and colleagues line the walls. Note also the clocks, some set at quarter to six, the time when Napoleon’s troops entered the city in 1806.

Parks & Nature

The arboretum Trsteno lies 18km Northwest to Dubrovnik. It developed out of a park surrounding the summer residence of the Gučetić-Gozze family. Family Gozze requested of ship captains to bring back all kind of seeds and plants from their travels. It is the oldest planned Renaissance park in Croatia (according to an inscription from 1502.) In 1948 it was declared a natural rarity and in 1962 registered as a protected natural monument that covers 255 000 square meters.

Arts & Culture

It was at the beginning of the 50s, when there were many theatrical and musical events springing up all over Europe, that the Dubrovnik Summer Festival was founded. However, the idea of harmonizing the renaissance and baroque atmosphere of Dubrovnik and the living spirit of drama and music, actually derived from the intellectual way of life of the city itself, from its living creative tradition, which has bestowed upon Croatian cultural and scholarly history, especially in theatre and literature, many great names and works, and kept it continually in touch with contemporary currents in western Europe.

This fort found itself under Dubrovnik rule in 1420 and was immediately submitted to further construction – rebuilding of certain parts, strengthening of others, arming and general maintenance. This fort survived unscathed the big earthquake of 1667. It is not mentioned in the 1672 archives as a military complex and it was probably abandoned around that time. As was customary in the region, the locals used the stones of the fort to build their homes and smaller walls, so Fort Sokol was heavily deconstructed. The ruins of the fort have been placed under state protection and are maintained in their present condition. Time table: 10:00 – 18:00 (1.4.– 31.5.) 10:00 – 19:00 (1.6.– 31.10.)

The monumental fortress, called the Gibraltar of Dubrovnik, rises 37 meters above sea level, and through its history has had many roles. The primary reason for its construction was a defensive nature, with main goal of protecting freedom of Dubrovnik. Written documents show that the14 century was crucial for the construction of this fort, because of its strategic position. The enlargement and reinforcement of Fort Lawrence was done on several occasions during 15th, 16th and 17 century. Throughout those centuries, Dubrovnik’s freedom was seriously threatened by the Venetians. The Fort was armed, with twenty guards and a captain who was a nobleman, on duty for one month only and the best paid.

The peaceful cloisters of Dubrovnik’s Franciscan Monastery not only provide respite from the heat and crowds of the focal Stradun, but house one of the oldest operating pharmacies in the world. By the tranquil garden in the inner courtyard, the Old Pharmacy still dispenses medicines to old locals who come in for their orders. It also displays an array of strange vessels and implements from centuries past, when alchemy was an inexact science.

Built after the 1667 earthquake that destroyed the original 12th-century church, Dubrovnik Cathedral contains rare holy relics within its Baroque exterior. The skull and limbs of city patron St Blaise are enclosed within in shiny casings covered in jewels, while the crucifix is said to contain splinters from the Holy Cross itself. Sundry gold vessels from Byzantium, Venice and the Orient complete the collection.

It wasn’t too long ago that the pristine Dubrovnik of today was being bombarded during the Croatian War of Independence. Photographer Wade Goddard came here to cover the Siege of the early 1990s, then decided to stay on and create this unique gallery. War Photo Limited is divided into a permanent exhibition of photographs from the Dubrovnik bombardment, and a temporary one from contemporary conflicts. Recent examples include depictions of scenes from Gaza and the Yemen.
