Swift Brook Road1604/05 winter encampment of the French expedition led by Pierre Dugua to establish a "settlement" trading post. Relocated to Port Royal, Nova Scotia in 1605 (two years before the settlement of the Jamestown Colony in Virginia by the English and ~100 years after settlement in what is now the Southern US by the Spanish).
Declared a National Monument in 1949. Redesignated an International Historic Site in 1984.
The mainland visitors site is located in Red Beach, 8 miles south of Calais.
