CATHEDRAL COVE”Is Accessed in Hahei at
“Te Whanganui-A-Hei” translates from Māori to .. “The Great Crossing of Kupe”( The First Māori Explorer which landed here )
Enjoy a 1 hour scenic coastal bush walk from Hahei Beach to Cathedral Cove or a 35 minute walk from the Grange Road Car Park at the top of the hill. (Our place is just a 3 minute Drive to the beginning of the walk track to Cathedral Cove )
Keep an eye out for our Native birds eg. Tui, Kingfisher, Fantail, Kereru Pigeons.
A Fantastic place for a picnic and enjoy a luxurious swim in crystal clear blue water. If you’re lucky enough you may even see dolphins and whales.

On the 10th November 1769 Captain Cook took the furthest longitude reading south, when Planet Mercury lined up with the Sun and named the Bay .. “Mercury Bay”
He named “Shakespeare’s Cliff” as it looks like a poet speaking poetry, welcoming visitors into the bay. You can see Shakespeare’s profile from midway along “Cooks Beach”
From the Lookout, there are beautiful views over looking Mercury Bay, Cooks Beach & Lonely Bay.

You can view Lonely Bay from Shakespeare’s Cliff Lookout. Drive back down hill from lookout, turn left on the tar sealed corner, there is a parking area here, walk down track to Lonely Bay. It’s a 3 minute Native bush walk down to the beach. A beautiful peaceful, serene place to go for a picnic and a great place for swimming and shell collecting.

You can view Lonely Bay from Shakespeare’s Cliff Lookout. Drive back down hill from lookout, turn left on the tar sealed corner, there is a parking area here, walk down track to Lonely Bay. It’s a 3 minute Native bush walk down to the beach. A beautiful peaceful, serene place to go for a picnic and a great place for swimming and shell collecting.
