Drive PEI - Beaches & Day Trips

Travelling with a Dog

We love our Pets and want them to love the Island as well! We have compiled a small list of dog friendly places in the Charlottetown area. Note - Most of the Provincial Beaches do not allow dogs during the summer season. If they do, they must be on leash. Beaches that are not run by the province are dog friendly.
Upton is an off leash dog park that has easy level trails, some hills and a water view. Tics have known to be in the area so ensure your dog has been treated beforehand.

Tracadie Beach is 15 minutes outside of Charlottetown. Locals love this sandy and shallow beach. Tracadie is off the beaten path and many beachgoers choose to bring their dogs here. Dogs must be on leash. Tracadie is not a provincial park so facilities are at a minimum. Bring everything you will need for a day at the beach.

Beaches

PEI has some of the best beaches in the world. Generally, red rocky beaches can be found on the South side of the Island and white sand dune beaches found on the North side of the island. Beaches on the south side tend to have warmer water than the North side beaches. Your park pass will give you access to the beaches that are located in the Provincial Parks, otherwise, there is a fee to enter.
Blooming Point Beach - white sand as far as your eye can see both left and right. A local's beach, so much so that Google Maps can't locate it ;). July-Sept the waters are perfect for swimming. If you walk very far to the right you will find PEIs only nude beach ;)

Home of the "Singing Sands" this is a white beach that is famous for bridge jumping. Shallow tidal pools make great areas to search for starfish or snorkel. Play area, food, fisheries museum, day park, facilities, and lifeguards.

Located just 15 minutes from Charlottetown, Brackley Beach offers miles of pristine sandy beaches and majestic dunes with various nearby attractions. Can get very busy, as Brackley Beach is one of the most iconic beaches on the Island.

Thunder Cove Beach is one of those hidden gems that locals try to keep for themselves. It’s off-the-beaten-path in Darnley, just outside of Kensington. While most of PEI’s north shore is known for epic rolling dunes and wide beaches of fine sand, Thunder Cove is so much different. Sandstone cliffs and dunes surround the beach. Explore the famous teapot rock, watch starlings fly in and out of their "rock nests" and enjoy the warm shallow waters.

Day Trips

My favorite day trips that showcase the best of PEIs food, scenery, and local culture.
Drive the Red Sand Shore Coastal Drive out to Victoria By the Sea. It is a really cute small town. Stop at the Landmark Cafe for freshly shucked oysters on the patio. They carry all local products and are super picky about their oysters. They only serve the best! Be sure to check out Michael Stanley Pottery and the many art galleries. You can then cut across the Island to the North side and drive a bit on the Green Gables Shore. Here you will see the white sandy beaches. Stop in at Covehead Harbour for Richards Fish and Chips (best on the Island) and then drive to Dalvay by the Sea for sticky date pudding. Pack your swim gear and pick one of the many beaches on this stretch. The main beaches are Brackly or Stanhope. There are tons of 'hidden' paths along this coast where you can find local beaches. Watch for a bunch of parked cars on the side of the road and you will prob find one of the hidden beach paths. ;)

Drive through the rolling green hills of PEI to get to Stanley Bridge. Stop at the Mill in New Glasgow for lunch and then cut over to Stanley Bridge. Grab a seat on the deck at Carr's Oyster Bar and enjoy fresh shucked Island oysters. Watch bald eagles soar over the bay while lobster and fishing boats come in and out of the wharf. Buy fresh lobster, mussels, and oysters at Carr's lobster pound located in the wharf. Cool off with a quick dip a the Swimming Rock or be brave and do as the locals do and go bridge jumping off the Stanley Bridge!
