Places to visit for nature lovers

If you are staying for longer than just a weekend, are too bored and hot in the city, or fed up with sunbathing and swimming, but like hiking - here are a couple of suggestions for fleeing town and taking a filed trip, in higher, green hills and mountains with non-salty waters.
Risnjak is a Croatian national park, less then an hour drive from Rijeka. If you decide to go, be sure to pack some warm clothes, because this mountain ridge is high and it can get pretty cold on higher altitudes. There are some big old trees in that forest, with lots of pines and leafy trees as well. There are several routes to the top. Find the one most appropriate for your level of hiking power. The climb is min 1 hour - 4 hours, depending on the route. Google a bit, or call the phone listed on this page, and be sure to reserve some beds, if you plan on spending the night, and go :D

Žbevnica. A small peak on the Ćićarija mountain. You can see it from the kitchen window, when there are no leaves on the tree in front of the apartment. A nice, shorter, easy walk, surrounded by trees and meadows. From the top, on a sunny day, you can see both Slovenia and Italy.

Although some 150 km from Rijeka, Plitvice Lakes are a must see when visiting Croatia, given you are willing to dedicate an entire day for this field trip. Beautiful lakes with waterfalls will just make you become a kid again. It is a national park, with numerous lakes and walking paths, tourist trains and guides, to tell you all about these natural wonders. To be completely honest, they are at their best in winter, when the waterfalls get frozen and all is white, but during summer they also have a sparkle, only this time it in shades of blue and green.

Cres is a beautiful island, and really close by. Not as many tourists as on Krk, or in Rijeka. There is still some untouched nature there, and due to various herbal plants growing there (like sage or immortelle), it is the nicest smelling island I know. Ideal for camping a few days, or just visit for one. Make sure you check the departure times for boats. They do go each day during summer season, but these things tend to change. Maybe the best way to do this is to go directly to the office and ask. It is located on the Dock, called Terminal, and it is next to the Brajda market (on the opposite side of the Theater).

Places to see in the city

You are sure to go to the center at some point. Here are some interesting historical sights, through which you might get a better understanding of the city and its dwellers, and fill your curiosity - and stomach, at the same time.
This is a historic, eye-pleasing, romantic Rijeka must-see. Located at the top of the Trsat hill, this old castle is interesting in itself with its architecture and history, but the best it offers is an open view over the city, the Rječina Canyon (hence the name of the city), and the Adriatic coast with islands in the back. Pick a sunny day, take the one(s) you love, take the bus no. 2, and exit the last station (Trsat Castle). Also, take your camera, and enjoy the sunset over Kvarner. There are numerous little coffee bars and restaurants in the area, so you can also enjoy some good food and drinks, for a comfortable late afternoon.

Hartera used to be a famous paper factory. Now mostly empty, for years it has served as a gathering point of Rijeka´s subcultural scene, with street art decorating this grand complex of buildings, as well as the street approaching it (Ružićeva street). A curious mingling in the area will get you some colorful eye-pleasing graffiti and murals, and if you are somewhat of an explorer, I would recommend entering wherever you see open doors. The inside of the complex has its dangerous parts, but be careful, and discover an entire hidden gem of Rijeka˙s (almost) forgotten past. Who knows, you might even see some of my work on these walls :D The "end" of the Hartera complex is at the same time the beginning of a walk, leading to the Rječina Canyon, which is also nice, and offers a "different" view of the city, because this time you will be looking up, instead of looking down. There are no restaurants or coffee bars there, so take some food with you, or eat something before entering Ružićeva street. There is a really nice restaurant with excellent food there, called Nebuloza, which I would recommend.

This is a good point to start your sightseeing of the Rijeka center. It is not as leaned as the one in Pisa, but Rijeka´s Leaning Tower has its own charm. From this point you will enter Rijeka´old town, see Mljekarski Trg (dedicated to the milkmaids who used to bring milk on foot, from the 10 km distant Grobnik area), then the City Clock, situated in the very center - the pedestrian zone Korzo, and the Kobler square. There is a Tourist Info Point at the Korzo, you can ask for a detailed map of the city, with descriptions of famous sights in English. At Korzo and its vicinity, there are numerous restaurants, fast food shops and coffee bars.

This is the Croatian National Theater, for those wanting to have some classical cultural experience. There domestic and guest operas, dramas and ballet there. Near the theater, there is the biggest Rijeka market - the Brajda market, where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruit, fish and meat, as well as other local goodies, flowers and clothes. It is lively and vibrant. Just be sure to arrive before 13/14 o´clock, because that is when some stands are closing, or have less good goodies. Everything gets taken :D It is nice to go early in the morning, buy groceries, have coffee somewhere near the theater, and admire the beautiful palaces and old buildings across the street. Or just turn to the other side, and sip you coffee looking at the sea.

This is my favorite little place to have coffee or enjoy good people, books and music. Nice people working there, positive energy, politeness and easy goingness in general :D They often have live music there, mostly on weekends; ranging from rock, blues and jazz to different kinds of world music (from Fado and Flamenco to Slavic music). I often hear street musicians playing there, often strangers on a break from their travel. So, it can get pretty international there. Every Tuesday there are open jam sessions. And the prices are normal, which in Croatian terms means cheap.
