Sightseeing

MURRAY DARLING JUNCTION This is the Junction of Australia's 2 longest rivers, the Murray and the Darling. Climb the viewing tower to view the colour difference in the 2 rivers. The Darling is a clay based river and its milky appearance contrasts starkly to that of the mighty Murray. Take a leisurely stroll along the walking track and maybe see a boat go through the Lock to the other side. A nice place for a picnic.

Be sure to investigate these awesome red sandhills. Believed to have originated over 40,000 years ago the dunes are ever changing & located just out of Wentworth, take the road to the right before you enter town. .Skeleton remains have been found there & replicas of these can be found at the Pioneer Museum. Aboriginal tribes used this area to camp & hunt, you can view the magnificent river red gum which has been consumed by sand and walk within the canopy of this ancient tree. The sandhills were used as a bombing range during WW11 and the area has been used as a backdrop for many films, TV shows & advertisements. Very serene & relaxing.

This is a fascinating step back in time. Built in 1879-1881 this gaol was designed by local colonial architect James Barnett and was the first of the Australian designed gaols. The bricks were made from local clay and the bluestone was transported from Victoria. The gaol has an escape free record and has some interesting stories to be read. A great way to amuse yourself or the kids for an hour or two.

Parks & Nature

The Junction Island Nature Walk tkes you to the point where the Murray River meets the Darling River. Just across the bridge is the canoe tree. At times you might wonder where this walk is taking you, it is sometimes narrow and at times the growth is a bit overgrown but it is none the less quite an easy and enjoyable walk. You might meet a kangaroo along the way and please be careful (I have only ever seen one snake there but it is bushland so they are about). There is plenty of birdlife to be seen and heard and your final destination will be right at the Junction of where the two rivers meet.
