Parks & Nature

It's a place to relax and enjoy lots of beautiful plants from all over the world. The entry fee is only €3. It will be especially enjoyable for visitors coming from colder countries as there are abundant tropical plants and all sorts of palm trees. The location is 25 mins uphill walk from the town centre & sea front and also on a major bus route.

The Loro Park was created by Wolfgang Kiessling with aims to help preserve and recover endangered parrot species and has continue to expand since. It extends across 13.5 hectares (33 acres) and is home to some 4000 parrots representing 350 species and sub-species, as well as many other animals. This parrot collection is the largest in the world and makes the park one of the main references in the study and conservation of these animals worldwide. It also has Europe's largest dolphin show pool, the world's largest indoor penguin exhibition, the longest shark tunnel in Europe, the largest Thai village outside Thailand, and the park is only the second place in Europe to house orcas.

located on a promontory on the center of Puerto de La Cruz it's this park, with amazing views of the city, spans across 100.000 m2 and it's divided into three areas; La Atalaya Gardens, "los jardines del Casino" and the "Camino de la Sortija" where during the past century the British colony organized race rings, hence the name of the walk. This is a place to take your time and walk and look around if you enjoy greenery and nice views.

This is one of my favourite beaches in Tenerife and it can be surprisingly quiet. Protected from the wind by the magnificent cliffs of La Orotava, this is a most charming black fine sand beach, with a little place to have something to drink and eat at the beach, toilets and a beachguard. To get there you have to go down the steps along the cliff through a narrow path to get to the beach. Right at the start of the path there is a restaurant "restaurante el Bollullo" where you can park your car for the whole day for 2€. I'd recommend to eat there too as they have decent food for a good price and you can eat on the roof area which is very nice on a warm day.

About 23 minutes walk from the apartment. The most popular beach in Puerto de La Cruz, it's a fine black sand beach, fully equipped with showers & toilets. You can sit down and have a drink & something to eat in the promenade overlooking the beach. Can be very busy during the hottest hours. If you happen to be around on the 23rd of June you musn't miss the traditional "Hogueras de San Juan" or "Bonfires of Saint John" celebration where crowds of people gather at this beach at night around bonfires and some of the bravest (and drunkest) attempt to walk or jump over the bonfires barefooted, the celebration lasts through the night, you can bring your drinks & even go for a swim in the dark.

The closest beach to the apartment. A black sand and pebbled beach, it's a nice spot to sit down and watch the sunset and it's quiet enough compared to other beaches in the area.

Sightseeing

At the end of "Plaza de Europa" public square, at the side of the pier you can find a little beach of black sand and rocks. If you happen to be around on the 24th of June do not miss the traditional "Baño de las Cabras" celebration where thousands of goats are brought to the "Playa del Muelle" beach by shepherds from all over the island and are carried into the water in a ritual that is thought to bring good health to the goats and to increase fertility. This ancient tradition is thought to have been originated during the time of the Guanches (the natives of the Canary Islands). Worth seeing!

Surrounding "Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia" a catholic church from 1697, this square has the best kept gardens in all the city. They are especially nice at Christmas time when they are planted with red poinsettias. In the centre of it there is a fountain dating from the year 1900 with swan made of stone. On one side there is a monument to Agustín de Bethencourt y Molina (1758-1824), a prominent figure in Puerto de la Cruz's history, a military engineer who became a general for the Russian Army of Tsar Alexander I and also designed several buildings and public structures in Russia, he was born close to where the monument stands.

Food Scene

This is a "guachinche" or local joint that I often go with my family on the weekends. If you are renting a car & you're up to experience real canary island's cuisine this is the type of place where we locals go, so do give this place a try. Like most guachinches you will feast here for a very good price, this place also has their own wine which you can buy for 5 € a bottle. Keep in mind that this is not a fancy joint, it's a family run local place with superb food and you might need to bring your Spanish dictionary along. If you're thinking about it you can contact me for further details on the type of food, tastiest dishes & specific directions to get there.

This is another of our favourite "guachinches" meaning local joints. This is a place to eat grilled local meat with typical canarian wrinkled potatoes and mojo surrounded by a beautiful area of chestnut woodland, have a plate of roasted chestnuts and a glass of "vino del país" (local wine) and simply breath the clean air seating in this simple terrace restaurant. You might be surprised of the landscape and this area is often very foggy and chill as it's located high up in La Victoria. If you want a break from the busy atmosphere in Puerto de La Cruz you will be glad to come here. If you're thinking about going you can contact me beforehand for more details.

This is a great place to have a taste of Canary Island's typical desserts and have tea or coffee sitting on the outside seat area which is connected to the beautiful layered gardens "Jardín Victoria", a place to spend a few hours relaxing and enjoying the surroundings and views.

Getting Around

The Bus station, we Canary Islanders call the bus "Guagua" unlike the rest of Spaniards, just in case you were wondering!.

Everything Else

If you happen to be around during Christmas time (24 novemeber - 9 January) You should check out the "ruta de Belenes" or "route of nativity scenes", you can start at the Ayuntamiento's (City Hall) Square where every year they have a large life size nativity scene, and follow on see the different nativity scenes. Also notable it's the nativity scene at "Ferretería Orotava" this is the hardware shop just across the street from the Square, here you must go through the shop & you'll get to an interior patio where the nativity scene is displayed, it's worth seeing also as an example of Canary Island architecture with a typical inner patio and wooden balconies. There is no entry fee.
