Food Scene

Great little restaurant, a bit of a Southend legend as it has been here since 1975, mostly under the same ownership. A bit like Mrs. Miggin's Pie Shoppe! Excellent food, I highly recommend the Chicken and Chestnut Pie and Brenda's Legendary Lemon Meringue for pud!!

Ten minutes walk along the seafront. Great for brunch overlooking the Estuary! Sunday lunches are very good too.

Further down the seafront at Westcliff-on-Sea are the Arches cafes, An iconic row of cafes that are a must for Saturday and Sunday brunch or just to sit outside with a coffee. They do get very busy when the sun's out though.

Visit the old fishing port in the High Street Old Leigh. If you like seafood and shellfish this is the place to go any time of day. The Crooked Billet and The Peter Boat are both great pubs serving delicious food, or buy your prawns and cockles outside The Crooked Billet and sit in the sun looking out over the Estuary. There's also fine dining at The Boatyard or try Simply Seafood. More details of the arts and crafts and tearooms at http://www.oldleigh.com/

Covering over 130 hectares, Hockley Woods are the largest remaining area of the wild wood, which covered Essex after the Ice Age 10,000 years ago. The woods are a complex mosaic of different trees, each species growing where conditions are most favourable. Oak and sweet chestnut grow on the higher ground; birch on the most acidic soils; hornbeam on the wet clays; willow, hazel and ash along the streams. Many of the plants in the wood, such as the wild service tree, wood anemone, wood spurge and cow-wheat will only grow on the undisturbed soils of ancient woods.
