Quite simply one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The beach is sheltered and generally very safe for swimming (always take great care at NZ beaches, as there can be strong currents). You can also swim in the sheltered estuary, which is beautiful, relaxing and very safe.

Take a cruise to the Poor Knights - a truly amazing marine sanctuary just off the coast of Matapouri. There are a number of local operators who provide cruises, including snorkeling and diving year-round.

There's a bit of a hike to get there, but it's well worth the effort. The Mermaid Pools have to be seen to be believed. Take your swimsuit, as the crystal clear waters are irresistible.

A beautiful beach that offers great surf on a shallow and relatively safe beach. Ask the locals to point you toward the local mussel beds - at low tide you can pick your own mussels (a delectable shellfish) to take home and cook.
