You wouldn't know you were in California at this mountain lake. You can't access the water unless you're a resident, but a worthy drive-by. Also a famous movie location for decades.

Only two miles away with breathtaking scenery and a pretty damn good brunch - it was a local secret until recently and now everybody knows about it. It's got oak trees, a pond, geese, outdoor dining and the food's not bad either.

A true original cowboy bar where - once upon a time - you could find Steve McQueen's motorcycle out front, and the man himself bellied up to the bar. They've got good eats, musicians with neck beards singing Neil Young tunes - what more could you ask for? It's only open Thursday thru Sunday with brunch on weekends - formerly a local secret, the words out and it can get busy but your best bet (if you're a couple) is to put your name down and sit at the bar. Thursday is locals night and less crowded.
