Art gallery in the centre of the city. There is always a selection of current contemporary exhibitions alongside the permanent historical collections. Also has a crafts collection which changes every few months. Activities are often available for young children and families for free. Excellent cafe on site too.

Beautiful gallery set in the grounds of Whitworth Park. Mostly contemporary exhibitions but there is always a selection of their archives on display. Very good textile display from around the world. Recommend coffee or lunch in the cafe "cafe in the trees'. The cafe is situated in the new extension, which is a modern glass room situated amongst the tree tops in the park.

In the heart of the city, this museum is a fantastic place to visit with children or just if you're interested in science and industry. It houses a replica of the first ever computer 'baby' which was created in Manchester University in 1948 . "Built and designed by Tom Kilburn and Freddie Williams at The University of Manchester, it was the first electronic digital computer capable of storing a program." There is also a whole building dedicated to the industrial revolution that houses machinery that was powered by steam. Lots of interactive stuff to do for the kids too.

From archeology and anthropology to earth sciences and entomology (that’s insects to you and me), the range of exhibits in the museum is mind-boggling. There’s Stan, a reproduction of a massive T-rex fossil. There are elaborate Egyptian sarcophagi and creepy looking mummies. There’s a giant Japanese spider crab. In short, there’s a whole lot to see and do whether you're eight or 80.

Architect Daniel Libeskind's astonishing building, an aluminium-clad landmark on the banks of the Manchester ship canal, could easily have overshadowed the content within. Brilliantly, it does not. Sloping floors and obtuse angles inside are a deliberately disorientating attack on the senses. Like Libeskind's Jewish Museum in Berlin, the experience of the building itself establishes a state of mind that makes what you're seeing all the more effective.

Thanks to a £12.5 million redevelopment of an existing, smaller museum, the People's History Museum re-opened in 2010 as a centre worthy of the important legacy that it houses: the 200-year-old story of British democracy. It grew out of the Trade Union, Labour and Co-operative History Society, which started archiving and collecting as far back as the 1970s.

Close to Salford University and in the grounds of Peel Park lies Salford Museum and Art Gallery, which opened in 1850 as the very first 'unconditionally free' public library in the UK. Now, you can wander its rooms and marvel at the fantastic collection of artworks on display – it’s a real celebration of Victorian painting.

Food Scene

This is our favourite place to go for food or just a drink. The food is French bistro style, the menu includes a fantastic steak frites, baked camembert , mussels and a changing dessert menu. Great low key vibe, excellent selection of drinks. They also host a comedy night which is highly regarded. They've just introduced a new breakfast menu. Highly recommended.

With dark, panelled rooms and frosted windows, Hawksmoor Manchester is the first branch of the upscale steakhouse to make its mark outside of London. Yet like its southern brethren, it’s a place to blur day with night over ginger cocktails and the country’s finest meat.

There are two types of sushi: the mass-produced standard kind that can be picked up at supermarkets, and the kind that's lovingly prepared in front of your face by a chef who will only use produce he deems worthy. The latter can be found at Umezushi, and the quality is so good it's a firm favourite with the city's chefs when they're off duty.

Manchester’s food lovers are forever fretting over the city’s lack of a Michelin star, and the arrival of Simon Rogan at the French was intended to change all that. Sadly, it didn't happen and Rogan departed some time ago leaving The French in the capable hands of Adam Reid, who had previously worked at the restaurant and been crowned a winner in the BBC's 'Great British Menu' competition. Despite Reid's best efforts and a refurb of the Grade II-listed dining room, we're still waiting for that star.

While certain other places nearby have been grabbing the limelight, this Manchester stalwart has quietly been turning out quality food in a relaxed and friendly environment for many years. Named after its location, The Northern Quarter Restaurant & Bar (or ‘TNQ’) shares many of the qualities of its namesake and, much like the area, appeals to the artistic, young professionals and creative types with its unique combination of stylish, funky minimalism.

Not to be confused with the soulless Food Court upstairs, the Arndale’s food market has come far. Newcomer Viet Shack, purveyor of addictive summer rolls and banh mi sandwiches, has supplanted the still-excellent Pancho’s Burritos as hipster foodie choice. But don’t forget about the cheese sandwiches at Queen Brie, Boggart Brewery’s cute Microbar and m1lkshake, where you can get any kind of candy put in (yes) a milkshake. Open daily, times vary.

Parks & Nature

There are a number of ways you can get onto the nature reserve, we find the easiest is to access it via Brookburn rd, just off from Beech rd. This is a great place to wonder along the river Ees which joins up with the River Mersey. Great place to go for a jog or walk with the dog.

Set amongst Styal Woods. This is a great place to visit for a stroll through the woods (becomes a carpet of bluebells in spring) or to visit the Mill ( National Trust). The cotton mill was the heart of working life at Quarry Bank. Visit the mill to discover how Samuel Greg founded his cotton empire and the story of the cotton trade. You can also understand the hardships faced by the workers who toiled in the mill, and uncover engineering genius at work.

Sightseeing

There are many reasons why The Quays should be at the top of your 'must see' list when you're in Manchester and Salford. This stunning waterfront destination has grown out of the once derelict docklands of the Salford and Trafford Quays area, transformed from desolate wasteland into a place where some of the country's most iconic buildings (both The Lowry and Imperial War Museum North are RIBA award winners) stand with their neighbours to provide a place where culture, sport, shopping and a lot more come together. And they're all within walking distance of each other.

Salford is a city full of surprises, and not the least significant of these is the magnificent Ordsall Hall, a Grade I listed Tudor manor house slap bang in the middle of a housing estate. The first ever recording of the hall was back in 1177 so you can see why this lovingly restored building earned its Grade I status.
